The Queensland Government committed $2.87 million, CoGC $2.4million and SYC $3.7million to help deliver a superyacht berth at the Southport Yacht Club creating more jobs in the rapidly growing superyacht industry. This crucial infrastructure was officially opened by Michael Healy, Member for Cairns, Assistant Minister for Tourism Industry Development and Government’s Superyacht Strategy Champion, on 16 February 2022.

This superyacht berth is a critical component of the Queensland Superyacht Strategy 2018-23 and is the first initiative supported by the $25 million Growing Tourism Infrastructure fund for shovel-ready projects as part of the Queensland Government’s Unite and Recover economic recovery strategy.

The Southport Yacht Club estimates the $9 million superyacht berth, located adjacent to Jack Gordon Park, supported up to 30 jobs during the construction phase, with many more supported as a result of the project. The new berth will cater for more and larger boats opening up the Gold Coast to some of the world’s largest and most luxurious yachts, benefitting businesses across the region.

About the GC

GCCM is ideally located on Queensland’s spectacular Gold Coast, mid-way between Cairns and Sydney.  Spanning more than 57 kilometres of picturesque coastline and bordered by world-heritage listed rainforest, the Gold Coast is Australia’s premier tourist destination – renowned for surf, sand and year round sunshine.  It is the ideal destination or stopover for vessels cruising the South Pacific or the east coast of Australia and also a dedicated port of clearance.

Located on the 27 th parallel south, the Gold Coast enjoys a sub-tropical climate of warm, dry winters and refreshing summers.

GCCM is one of the only Superyacht shipyards in the world where you can catch a surf break in the morning, complete a full and productive day in the yard before watching the sunset with a cocktail in hand from a multitude of coastal chic bars.

Entering Australia

The Gold Coast has a dedicated customs, quarantine and inspection point at Southport Yacht Club.  Less than two nautical miles from open sea, the berth accommodates yachts in excess of 75-metres and is an ideal location for yachts entering Australia from the South Pacific.

GCCM is located 10 nautical miles from the clearance berth and, as a member of the Seal Superyacht network of yacht support agents, can support you with Australian customs, visa and permit regulation.

GCCM operates an on water 24-hour, 7-day a week fuel dock offering diesel and unleaded in both high and standard flow.  During business hours every day, Dockmasters are on hand to assist you.

For bulk fuel purchases, we can provide a service at the fuel wharf or through fuel bunkering services in our Superyacht basin

GCCM’s reputation in the global refit market has captured the attention of leading yacht and marina brands  seeking to support their own clients with a trusted partner in the South Pacific.  GCCM has been appointed the preferred service centre for Benetti, Gulf Craft and Cantiere Delle Marche.  The facility is also a strategic partner to IGY Marinas and Seal Superyachts.

Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard is a 5 Gold Anchor facility.  This is the highest accreditation in the worldwide initiative which celebrates marinas operating with exceptional customer service standards.  By receiving a 5 Gold Anchor status, GCCM has demonstrated excellence in facilities, services, customer satisfaction, quality and ethical standards.  When you select GCCM as your superyacht refit destination of choice, you can do so with 5 Gold Anchor confidence.

5 Gold Anchor Service

M/Y Mangusta (131 ft. Overmarine)

As Master of the 40m new build Motor Yacht Mangusta, It is my pleasure to be writing this letter of commendation for Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard. GCCM was highly recommended to us through a reliable source, while based in Fiji and seeking a world-class shipyard in the South Pacific to carry out extensive repair & refit works as well as a 5 year survey. The shipyard lived up to our expectations, while even exceeding them on several occasions.

Our tenure at GCCM lasted 4 months, from July to Oct 2021. Our extensive job list included: Fresh & black tanks re-coating, class approved soft patch installation in transom, generator re-builds, main engine half-life overhauls, Rolls Royce jet drive overhaul, electrical design and overhauls, paint repairs, interior repairs, deck repairs, tender refits, and 5 year class survey items.

I would like to give special accolades to the following contractors involved in our diverse project. We had a great experience with each of them and would not hesitate to enlist any one of them again:

  •   Sweep Marine Services ~Tank re-coatings, paint repairs, vessel protection & encapsulation
  •   O’neill Shipwrights ~Transom Soft Patch, Underwater Lights Installation
  •   Benson & Brown ~Marine Electrical Survey & Design, ‘cutting-edge’ installations
  •   Pacific Maritime Solutions ~Engineering Systems & Hydraulics, Rolls Royce KaMeWa systems
  •   Transmarine Asia Pacific ~MTU Diesel M/E and Kohler Generator Overhauls
  •   Lumark ~Bespoke Metal Fabrication
  •   Australian Marine Enterprises (AME) ~Bespoke Custom Tender Refit
  •   Finishline Paint ~Yacht & Tender Coatings
  •   Pacific Trim ~Marine Trimming & Upholstery
  •   WISE Boatbuilding ~Deck Repairs
  •   Bradford Marine Services ~Antifouling

On-site project management by Pete Grocock was an immense support to us. Pete’s drive & energy, dynamic abilities, and positive contractor relations ensured maximum results. The travel-lift team were calm, safe, and dependable. The 24hr security team were on-point, professional, and helpful. The Quarterdeck Restaurant and it’s friendly staff provided culinary support to our crew, and a serene atmosphere in which to dine and relax.

I most appreciated the management in their flexibility to our unique needs and ever-changing itinerary. They were always accommodating and showed great resourcefulness in problem solving. We depart on a high note, and I would not hesitate to return again in future aboard this vessel or any other in my command.

Vessel Captain – Lachlan Griffiths

M/Y One O One (128ft Tecnomar)

The time spent at GCCM was productive as we had both Wise Boatbuilding and various other trades involved in the refit at our fingertips. The team are always welcoming and willing to go out of their way to make both the owner and the crews time in the shipyard easy and enjoyable. Clean and accessible facilities as well as welcoming staff and tradesmen. One O One is a great example of the quality finishes and craftsmanship that can be achieved in Australia.

Vessel Captain – Craig Lindsay

M/Y Murcielago (100ft Sunseeker)

We have spent significant time on the yard and in the refit shed at GCCM. What has impressed me the most has been the flexibility, professionalism and accommodating nature of the yard staff and contractors. It has allowed us to complete an extensive list of works as  efficiently as possible. I will definitely be bringing the boat here every year for all the works needed. Thank you for making our experience as productive and painless as possible.

Vessel Captain – Jon Bischoff

M/Y Little Blue (89ft Jade Yachts)

The yacht had been at GCCM in late 2018 for the usual annual maintenance period. When looking for a yard to complete a hull refinishing and the engineering works for PYLC, we were confident in selecting GCCM again based on our previous experience. The contractors were of high quality and very well priced. The crew and I selected them based on word of mouth referrals and competitive quotes. We had access to all the trades we needed onsite and they worked well together. Everyone from the café staff to the office and yard teams were helpful and friendly.

Vessel Captain – Dan Airey

The YOT Club (131ft Custom Trimaran)

We were very specific in selecting the contractors and facility who work on this yacht. She is not a traditional superyacht, yet we want for those who board her to gasp as they would entering a yacht. For that, we needed a group who were well versed in delivering this level of craftsmanship and it was impossible to go past the team at GCCM.

Vessel Owner – David Fisher

S/Y Atao (82ft JFA Yachts)

We also used the time to complete a range of works calling on many of the contractors onsite at GCCM… the trip was well worth it as the yard was 50% cheaper than Sydney and the contractors were very price competitive.  We have also encountered a really friendly community both in the GCCM team and the tenants. I have had access to a courtesy car which is invaluable for someone away from their home port.

Vessel Owner – Alex Martin

M/Y Ghost II (122ft Gulfcraft)

We selected GCCM for our three-month project predominantly due to its reputation for quality work.  The other main factor was the range of contractors and services in the facility.  I managed the project and it was invaluable that the GCCM team and contractors would work around the boat’s schedule and each other to get the job done.  The wealth of knowledge and experience of some of the senior shipwrights at GCCM to select the right contractors for the right job certainly made the difference to our project.

Vessel Captain – Craig Pearson

M/Y Lady Pamela (98ft Azimut)

The  crew were so pleased with our time in the shipyard.  Every staff member from the lovely ladies in the office to the security guys of an evening and even the shipyard guys who did our haul out were always friendly, attentive and nothing was ever an issue.

Charter Manager – Kirsty Sabarre

M/Y Pursuit (167ft Damen)

I would just like to personally thank GCCM for the service they provided the vessel during our time in the yard, and the helpful staff and supplied contractors for any situation that the vessel needed.  The GCCM project management was such an asset and made every aspect of the refit that much easier knowing it was quality controlled and kept to a strict schedule enabling us to concentrate on other projects.  Also, the friendly staff for organizing the great crew excursions, and involving all the yachts in the marina.

Chief Officer – Byron Dobson

M/Y SuRi (207ft Expedition Yacht)

From day one GCCM has provided us with exceptional service, expertise and all the facilities that we need to get work done in an efficient and cost-effective manner. All of the marina staff are always professional and willing to go the extra mile for us and do so with a smile. The facility itself with all the trades we require under one roof enables us to get numerous quotes for the same job so that we can make informed decisions quickly.  All of the above in conjunction with the crew activities the marina puts on (Top Golf, bowling etc) along with the location of GCCM make it a great place for any superyacht to get refit work done.

2 nd Officer – Sam Redward

M/Y Oneworld (101ft Gulfcraft)

The reason we chose GCCM is because of the level of service and exceptional range of contractors.  GCCM is the best shore support in the industry.  Kevin Altera provided 100% support 24 hours a day.  Travis Slatter lifted and stood the yacht with great care and attention.  The office team and Yacht Concierge were always on hand and nothing was ever too difficult.  We used a variety of contractors and all of them gave great advice and support.

Vessel Captain – Matthew Baily

M/Y Pangaea (190ft Halter Marine – Expedition Yacht)

GCCM has been the most refreshing shipyard experience I have had in many years of yachting.  What a great example this facility is to the industry on how things should be done.  I can highly recommend them to industry.  Everyone really made us feel at home and welcomed.  All our wishes were met with a smile and helpful attitude.  The crew absolutely loved the Gold Coast area.

Vessel Captain – Ferdi Heymann

M/Y Playpen (140ft Richmond Yacht)

Over a six-week period, we completed a large list of works including some intricate and challenging engineering work.  The great aspect of completing work at GCCM is the array of contractors from which you can select, the confidence in their work and knowing you have the support of the GCCM team, many of whom are ex-crew and leaders in their field.

Project Manager / Relief Captain – Peter Cook

Yacht Manager – Greg Numa

Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard are a world class act in the Superyacht business.  The marine maintenance business is people driven and you could not find a more caring group of professionals than those associated with GCCM.  Thank you, Trent, and to all of your staff for making my life pretty simple and stress free.  You have by far one of the slickest operations in this arena.

Master Greg Numa

M/Y Dragonfly (240ft Silveryacht)

We have been to GCCM a number of times in the past few years and in my 15 years of yachting, which includes nine years of Command, a build, and multiple large refits. I have never been so well looked after by a professional, fun, and friendly team.

Director of Maritime Operations at Fly’ Fleet – Master Mike Gregory

M/Y Ubiquitous (112ft Westport Yacht)

After cruising up north, we headed back to GCCM for a full yard period and the team were great in making sure everything went smoothly. Kevin and Kimberley were on hand to make my life easier throughout the project. I would strongly encourage any captain looking at their next yard period to contact GCCM as you can trust they will get the job done on time and in budget.

Vessel Captain – Lachlan Calcutt

M/Y The Star (144ft Benetti)

I’d like to express my gratitude to GCCM for providing a world-class superyacht refit facility with service to match for our major refit project. Every aspect from planning our arrival, services and trades onsite, ease of engaging outside trades, and the friendly staff always available 24/7 made our stay enjoyable. We look forward to returning.

Vessel Captain – Edward Woodman

M/Y Shirley-Anne (118ft Custom Motor Yacht)

I have been in the motor yacht industry for the past 42 years and have worked all over the world in new build and refit yards, working on vessel’s from 72-metres to 140-metres. I have run three different boat building yards in Australia, and understand the complexities of the process of builds and refit work and the challenges in running yards.  Late in 2018, I was asked to oversee a large refit of a classic family motor yacht (M/Y Shirley Anne) that was originally built for the Owner’s family in Australia and is now owned by another family member and his wife who love the vessel. The task was to refit her to her former glory without changing the style and feel of the original design of the motor yacht. One of the major tasks was to design and integrate a new overhanging swim platform into the vessel without anyone realising anything had been added or changed on the vessel, this was achieved very successfully and the Owners are delighted with the complete refit.  The Captain and I considered a few yards and facilities in Australia and New Zealand to complete the works in a clean and safe environment). It didn’t take us long to narrow down the preferred site to Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard, which was able to offer us all the facilities and trades people we need to complete the works in the right environment. They were very helpful in the whole process of the refit and it was an easy place to work from. The staff couldn’t do enough for us and were always available at all times to help us with whatever we needed.  It was a pleasure to complete the refit at GCCM and I would recommend Kevin and his team to anyone looking for a facility for refit and repair works.

Southport yacht club to host new superyacht berthing simulations.

Published Thursday, 20 May, 2021 at 08:30 AM

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning The Honourable Dr Steven Miles

The next generation of superyachts of up to 130 metres will be one step closer to berthing at the Southport Yacht Club thanks to advanced simulation technology.

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development Steven Miles opened Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show today and announced the superyacht simulation technology, an approximately $65,485 investment.

“We have contributed $19,000 towards high-tech computer simulations to ensure the safety of large vessels on their way to the new superyacht facility at the Southport Yacht Club.

"These simulations will be a state-of-the-art run-through to show exactly how vessels of up to 130 metres will move through the Southport Spit.

“This follows our initial investment of $2.87 million to develop Australia’s largest superyacht berthing facility on the Gold Coast.

“As the world opens up after COVID-19, we want more superyachts enjoying the Queensland coastline but it is important to ensure the safety of crews and passengers as they pass through our waterways.

“Queensland has had a strong health response, so we’re getting on with our plan for the state’s economic recovery.”

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said Gold Coast City Council was investing $20,000 in the project.

“I’m delighted to see further investment in our emerging superyacht  industry.

“The entire east coast offers so much to these high-value visitors so it’s important we do everything we can to promote our port as a must-visit destination.”

Southport Yacht Club (SYC) General Manager Brett James said the club was pleased to partner with the Queensland Government and Gold Coast City Council on securing access to this vital technology.

“Maritime Safety Queensland currently allows berthing of up to an 85-metre vessel, so these simulations will help to determine if the maximum length of vessel that could safely berth at the SYC could be increased to 130 metres,” Mr James said.

Mr Miles said the Queensland Government is also financially contributing to a series of nine videos being developed by Superyacht Australia.

“These videos will put Queensland’s premier sailing destinations and infrastructure hubs on the world stage,” he said.

“Queensland has some of the best coastlines in the world, so it makes sense to broadcast that.”

Mr Miles said it’s been an impressive week for the marine industry on the Gold Coast.

“I was fortunate to also open and attend the Australian Superyacht, Marine Export and Commercial Marine Industry (ASMEX) 2021 conference this week,” he said.

“It’s clear Queensland is leading the nation in tapping into the superyacht sector, which is predicted to expand to $1.1 billion and nearly 8000 jobs by the end of this year.

“Our goal since we announced the five-year Queensland Superyacht Strategy in 2018 has been to position the state as the place to invest in this industry.

“Fast forward to 2021, Queensland’s low rates of COVID-19 has enhanced the state’s global reputation as a safe place to do business.”
