nord yacht pula

Pula has been the cultural center of the Istrian peninsula since Roman times, so it is not surprising that this city radiates such energy and has attracted numerous movie stars, famous musicians and tourists in search of a unique experience for centuries

Unveiling Pula’s Treasure Trove of Historical Sites

Pavarotti, Sting, Leonard Cohen, Tom Jones, David Gilmour, Elton John, 2Cellos are only part of the galaxy of world music stars who held unforgettable concerts in the Pula Arena, the sixth largest in the world, and Pula – that port city full of history – permanently marked as a world ‘must see’ destination. To fully appreciate Pula’s captivating charm, consider chartering a yacht and embarking on a personalized sailing adventure.

Luxury yachting Noor II main

A truly avant-garde yacht, Noor’s award-winning asymmetric design is a product of Sanlorenzo’s partnership with American car design guru Chris Bangle, refined by the masterful eye of Zuccon International Projects.

The Mediterranean climate, an excellent location within a large and wide bay, according to archaeological finds in the nearby Šandalja cave, made Pula interesting to people already at the dawn of civilization, some, you would not believe, almost a million years ago.

The magnetic charm of this unique place continuously attracts merchants, after the conquerors, since Roman times, and today especially tourists from all corners of the world, therefore it is not surprising that Pula is the cultural center and largest city of Istria even in the 21st century.

Exploring Pula’s Vibrant Culture and Culinary Delights

Historical walks along ancient pavements, excellent Istrian gastronomy , plenty of adventure tours through unique natural landscapes or nightlife known for its rocker wire, which has been vibrating for decades, all of this is intertwined in one epicenter of the southwestern part of the beautiful peninsula of Istria.

Pula, Augustan Forum

Whether you approach the city from the sea, by road or by plane to the nearby Pula Airport (Trieste and Ljubljana airports are also nearby), Pula is definitely a city that will permanently fascinate you.

The fantastic geographical position was used by the Illyrian tribe Histri, and then by the Greeks, but with the Romans, the real flowering of Pula began, which reached its zenith during the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.

Then, in the 19th century, this city becomes the main war port of the Empire, and this ‘melting pot’ of nations and customs in the years to come will make Pula the way we know it today – a beautiful and vibrant destination that truly has no equal.

Roman amphitheatre.

Roman amphitheatre , Pula

The Vespasian Arena is certainly the ‘epicenter’ of Pula, and the ‘Spectacvla Antiqva’ is a staging of gladiator fights that can be experienced every week during the warm months in the Arena, where you will have fun, but sometimes also learn with a lot of action and magnificent scenography.

But before you visit this amphitheater preserved in its original form, which was built when the Roman Colosseum was, step into the hustle and bustle of the city through one of the city gates. The Double Gate and the Hercules Gate were the entrances to the city, but the Arc de Triomphe with the carved names of the Sergius is still the most impressive gate, so much so that Michelangelo himself sketched it.

Golden Gate

Next to the gate itself, also known as the Golden Gate, is a statue of the Irish writer James Joyce, who lived in Pula and even taught for a time, next to which many tourists take photos, and nearby are popular places for drinking the first morning coffee.

Golden Gate, Pula

Joyce is by no means the only writer associated with the city, because Pula was mentioned by Dante himself in one of the most significant works of the Renaissance – the Divine Comedy, and for all literature lovers, every autumn whose Pula lives with the Sa(n)jam book fair.

Pula lives for music, so numerous cafes and clubs maintain the tradition of live music and good times, such as Rock Cafe, rock bar Mimoza, bar Pietas Julia, beach bar Zeppelin, DC Rojca, Stella club, Circola… But, apart from numerous musicians, Pula is since 1952, it has hosted a large film festival in the Arena itself, so many film stars paraded through these streets.

Although the side streets, and especially the many parks with an Austro-Hungarian flair, invite you to take a look, a leisurely walk to the south leads to the main square – the Forum.

With the remains of the Temple of Augustus, this square, with its openness and close to the sea, is a favorite place for locals to drink morning coffee, but also a beautiful place surrounded by galleries and restaurants for a good time both in the morning and at night.

Not even a five-minute walk from the Forum, the Venetian fortress from the 17th century offers a perfect vantage point on the nearby Roman theater, as well as on the entire city and the surrounding water area. Inside the fortress is the Historical and Maritime Museum of Istria, where you can learn almost everything about the history of Pula and Istria.

The deep bay and the natural protection of the harbor created ideal conditions for the construction of a defense system with as many as thirty forts, which made Pula impregnable and the development of the city unhindered.

The circular fort of Maria Luisa on the Muzil peninsula is one of the most interesting, so it is really worthwhile to walk to it on the peninsula and along the way discover the famous city beach at Stoja, Valkane or Galebove stijene, or rent a kayak and row along a 30 km stretch of coast and visit Štinjan and Fort Punta Christo.

circular fort of Maria Luisa

In all periods of history, Pula was the epicenter of culture and development, but in the 19th century, it was connected directly to Vienna by railway, and the city became a modern polis where ideas, trends mix, and foreshadows the arrival of a new age.

In addition to the first cars, an electric tram runs through the streets of Pula, and Herman Potočnik, a native of Pula, writes the visionary work ‘The Problem of Space Travel – The Rocket Engine’. He is considered a pioneer of space travel who even predicted the International Space Station, in the form of a wheel, as depicted by Stanley Kubrick in the iconic ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’.

Unveiling Pula’s Hidden Gems

The former Arsenal, located on the southern coast of the Pula Bay, is a monument to one of the most advanced facilities for building (war) ships of that time. Even today, ships are built in the Uljanik shipyard, on the islet of the same name, and they made a breakthrough in production in 2018 with the launch of the world’s first luxury polar cruiser, the ‘Scenic Eclipse’.

The branched network of tunnels – Zerostrasse, was created during the First World War, and the hidden world under the entire urban fabric, which connects the seven city hills (Zaro, Ghiro, Serpente, Magno, Paradiso, Rizzi and Vidal) with the Castle, provided protection for about 50 thousand people . Today, the complex is open to the public, and in the cool corridors you can take refuge from the heat and discover an interesting past with an emphasis on the industrial age of the city.

However, so that the impressions of Pula are not created only from traces of the past, take a look at the Museum or the ‘House of Istrian Olive Oil’ just fifty meters from the amphitheater. An ideal place for all lovers of this divine liquid, in addition to the history of Istrian olive growing, it also offers a tasting of the best virgin oils, while the Gourmet tour takes you to places of autochthonous Istrian gastronomy, including the town market.

Pula Aquarium

Aquarium Pula

Built in the height of Art Nouveau, all covered with glass and iron, it is not only one of the city’s landmarks, but is still the central point of supply for the people of Pula. A visit to the Pula Aquarium, located in the famous Verudela fortress, will delight the youngest, who have the opportunity to see Adriatic and tropical fish in more than a hundred pools. If you are on a group visit, try the Arena Mysterium game where teams solve different tasks and get to know Pula in a different way.

The Museum of Good Memories – MEMO also offers something unusual, which will certainly make domestic tourists smile full of nostalgia, and give foreign visitors an insight into what it was like to live in Pula during the prosperity of socialism from the 1950s to the end of the 80s.

Mystical Istria is full of beautiful places and nature, but Pula is a true city, which the greatest empires breathed timeless beauty into and designed for a comfortable life. Some of that beauty has been eroded in recent decades, but the essence is still there and offers a sea of ways to explore it and truly love it.

Pula – the yachting capital of northern Croatia

Croatia is considered one of the best sailing destinations, and this is not surprising – the warm and calm Adriatic Sea, lots of comfortable marinas, azure, crystal clear water, ideal microclimate and breathtaking landscapes. Pula is a city on the shores of the Istrian peninsula.

This area is tacitly considered the yachting capital of northern Croatia. There are practically no strong waves here, there is almost always clear, sunny weather, and thanks to the purest water from the side of the vessel, it is possible to see the bottom to a depth of about 5 meters.

Travel plan

Our unforgettable cruise will last for 7 days, a more detailed tour itinerary is offered to your attention.

Our journey starts in the city of Pula – the largest settlement on the Istrian peninsula. The yacht capital of northern Croatia is nestled at the end of a deep-sea bay, making it a long-standing and safe harbor for large and small vessels. Both experienced yachtsmen and beginners who are just starting their sailing journey love to drop anchor here.

Poole Sea Gate is described in the sailing manuals as the safest and most comfortable harbor in the world. This is due to the islets that divide it into a number of basins and because of free access from the sea.

It is also worth noting a local attraction – the world-famous Roman amphitheater (Pula), in which the cultural life is in full swing. It hosts opera concerts, various events and the famous film festival.

Today we will arrive at the island of Losinj. The local area is famous for its mild microclimate, gorgeous pine forests. This is not only a resort area, but also a sanatorium.

One of the most picturesque places on the island is Chikwat Beach. In the era of the Romans, Lošinj was called Apsorrus, there were a lot of villas and palaces. Many ancient architectural monuments of the 14-15th centuries have survived to this day.

These are ancient churches, for example, the Church of St. Martin, the town tower on Little Lošinj, and so on.

The third day of our cruise will be dedicated to one of the islands of the Kvarner Bay archipelago, an area called Rab. It is located in the northern zone of the Adriatic Sea of Croatia.

The eponymous capital of the island is famous for its own walls, whose trace goes back to the Middle Ages. Here you can also explore the churches, bell towers and palaces, rebuilt in the Romanesque style, walk the streets, skillfully laid out in stone, and admire the picturesque facades of buildings.

Right outside the city wall is Komrkar – a park of amazing beauty, where it is so pleasant to sit in the shade of spreading trees, admire nature and breathe the purest air with the scent of sea and pine resin.

We will spend this day on one of the largest Croatian islands – Krk. This area is famous for its ancient history. In ancient times, there were a lot of settlements, on the site of which the cities of the island proudly stand now.

Not far from Krk there was a naval battle between the fleets of Pompey and Caesar. This significant event took place in the 1st century BC.

The island is famous for its own vineyards, olive plantations and beautiful landscapes of mountainous areas planted with greenery.

Today our day will take place on the Rovinj peninsula, which is located in the northern part of Istria. The very area where this ancient city is located is very similar in shape to a drop of water. In the heart you can see the Cathedral, and from the coast we can admire a gorgeous view of a group of 22 islands. In the new part of the city, there are many beaches with small pebbles, along which it is very convenient to enter the water, then there are large stones. There are cozy little bays where you can swim very well with children. There are also several nudist beaches here.

Rovinj will delight not only lovers of ancient architectural monuments, lovers of modern recreation will be delighted with the entertainment center Monvi. This is one of the brightest and most festive places on the entire coast of Croatia. Bars, nightclub, Mexican restaurant, pizzeria and concert venue.

On the sixth day of our cruise, we will explore Brijuni, an archipelago of 14 islands near Pula. The historical value of this area is confirmed by architectural monuments such as the Church of St. Herman, the Temple of Venus, and so on.

The Brijuni group of islands has been recognized as a nature reserve, we will enjoy crystal clear waters, gorgeous subtropics and a warm climate.

Located in the heart of beautiful Istria – which is characterized by its enchanting coastline, rolling hills, and rocky, jagged coast – Pula is one of Croatia’s most popular havens for yachters and shipbuilders.

Having once served as headquarters for Romans, and later, an Austro-Hungarian naval port, today, Pula welcomes yacht charter guests to explore its streets and take a step back in history.

Just like any other town, the central powers of Pula are driven by a focus on business, government, and commerce. But for fun, the town’s residents and yacht charter guests can take advantage of concerts and events at the authentic Roman amphitheater, try the delicious local fare, head to the nightclubs, or spend their days basking in the Croatian sun at the beach on Verudela Peninsula.

Pula Yacht Charters – Things to Do & See

Pula yacht charters

During your next yacht charter in Croatia, anchor at Pula and experience some of its most beautiful sites:

Cathedral of the Assumption

Located on the south side of Pula Bay, at the foothills of a 17th-century Venetian fort, the Cathedral of the Assumption is one of only two official seats of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Poreč and Pula. With churches onsite first built as far back as the 4th- and 5th-century AD, today, the present-day church is still used for worship – and still takes visitors back to antiquity in Pula.

Gate of Hercules

Standing tall between two Medieval towers, the Gate of Hercules marks the entrance to what was once an Ancient Roman settlement. The result of simple construction, the Gate of Hercules is made of uncarved stone blocks, and bears an original, though now broken, carving of the head of Hercules and his club. Proving its historic significance is an inscription containing the names of two Roman officials, Lucius Calpurnius Piso and Gaius Cassius Longinus, who were originally charged with founding a Roman colony in Pula.

Temple of Augustus

Situated in the Forum, and built between the year 2 BC and 14 AD, the Temple of Augustus is dedicated to the goddess Roma and Emperor Augustus. Originally built as a pagan place of worship, the temple’s function changed throughout history – since then, it has served as a church, a granary, and at the start of the 19th century, even a museum for stone monuments. Today, the Temple of Augustus houses an impressive collection of ancient stone and bronze sculptures.

Triumphal Arch of the Sergi

Built between 29 and 27 BC, the Triumphal Arch of the Sergi was erected to honor three members of the Sergi family who held important positions in Pula at the time. Constructed in the Corinthian style — and ornately decorated, with influences from Greece and Asia Minor — this arch is oftentimes referred to as “ Golden Gate. ” Torn down in the 19th century due to city expansion, today, the arch stands next to a town square; the site of some of Pula’s best theatrical and musical performances, as well as shopping.

The marina can be approached from the south side of St. Andrew Island as well as the route between the islands of Uljanik and St. Andrew.

Holidaymakers on board luxury rental yachts and yacht charter sailors can use Cape Kumpar’s green lighthouse as their waypoint when sailing to Pula. Yacht charter enthusiast must be conscious about the fact that there are no breakwaters in the marina and that the top speed within the harbor and marina is 8 knots.

Pula Yacht Charter Enquiry

Dear Nicolas, - Once again, many thanks for arranging this charter. For the boat - great in terms of overall layout - spacious rooms in brand new condition. Lots of space to move around and plenty of space for 10 passengers. Also good space on the deck - especially on the triboard which is well protected from the sun - we spent a lot of time there. Technically in very good condition - great ventilation and stabilisers. No smell of diesel whatsoever - engine room well pressurised and in immaculate condition. Boat was very stable throughout and not noisy during the night passages. Lots of toys on board - all brand new. They will have their own seabobs next yeat (very popular toy for us and especially the kids). Great idea with the slide from the top deck.. The crew definitely made this a fantastic journey - it will be hard to find better. Great service - discreet and nice without being invasive. Always new decorative touches during lunch and dinner. Candles in the evening. We were pleasently surprised because they had a lot of initiative in that sense. Unpacked our bags and hung everything in a tidy manner. Beds always prepared twice a day. Crew very helpful with the toys - we were very demanding in that sense since we wanted everything prepared for the morning - and we required a lot of stuff to be prepared and in the water. Chef is great - always fresh food and great recepies - this boat deserves to be qualified as a michelin star restaurant. Great breakfast and amazing desserts. So overall - great experience. We would also like to thank you for organising the charter and the embarkment which was very efficient and stress free. I realise that you had to coordinate a lot of things at the last minute. We will be getting in touch with you for our future charters. Charter on AUSTRALIS around Naples & Amalfi.

6-day Sailing Itinerary from Pula

You can go in virtually any direction from Pula and be assured of a great holiday. Heading north offers the town of Rovinj, or further, the chance to sail to Italy. Following the coastline southwards will take you across to Rijeka and Krk (and further, to the party town of Pag). Or if you’re an island hopper, you can hop down and around Cres, Losinj, and onwards to the Kornati islands.

Pula - 6 day Sailing itinerary

In total, the route is 138 nautical miles, and takes in beautiful Rovinj, the party district of Veruda, and the islands of Cres, Osor and Susak. 138 nautical miles means sailing for an average of 23 nautical miles, which, at an average speed of 5-6 knots, means you should be sailing for about 4-6 hours a day (leaving plenty of time to explore the places where you start and end the day, or spending time on beaches or in bays along the way). It should be a leisurely pace and leaves you plenty of time to relax and enjoy the sunshine.

Rovinj

Rovinj is a historic and beautiful fishing town with narrow cobbled streets and an almost venetian feel – which, given how close we are to Venice, makes sense. The town was once an island – the channel between the island and the mainland was only filled in in 1763.

The old town is a brilliant place to stroll around (particularly with an ice-cream) and the whole place begins to buzz in the evenings, when the landlubbing tourists leave their four-star hotels and fill the bars and restaurants. Rovinj is one of the prettiest towns in Croatia (and there are many) and it is well worth this trip north to savour its’ unique atmosphere.

Veruda

Another reason why sailing to Rovinj made sense was because it means that we can sail through the Brijuni islands as part of this itinerary. The 14 Brijuni islands and islets are now a marine national park, and look full of nature, but they have a crazy history, which you’ll be able to spot as you sail by. They were first used as a lavish holiday island by a super-rich Roman family, who built a giant Roman villa on the largest island (which you can still see the ruins of today), later it became the holiday islands of the local royal family, before becoming something of an 18th century tourist resort, complete with four five-star hotels and the first golf course in Croatia. No, seriously. It was also the centre of the Polo playing world, for a short while.

After decades of decline, it ended up in the hands of the state and General Tito, the communist president of Yugoslavia, restored some of its former glory before inviting the heads of state of 90 countries to the islands in 1989 to sign the Brijuni agreement! Nowadays, there’s a safari/zoo on the island which was built up primarily from animals gifted to General Tito - so don’t be surprised if you spot a Zebra or an elephant on the islands!

Passing the Brijuni islands, we’re going beyond Pula and up an inlet to Veruda. Once a lively village in its own right, it’s now connected to Pula by urban sprawl, and if you were based in Pomer, now is a good time to walk across and see what Pula has to offer for yourself. You’ll have noticed the beaches and forts on your sail in – all of which are worth a visit if you have time, and Veruda itself is a posh part of town, so you could spend the afternoon ogling at Ferrari’s and Porsches on the driveways nearby. Veruda is also one of the livelier districts come the evening, and this will be your last chance to party before we head off to secluded islands.

Cres

From Veruda we’re going around the Istrian headland before heading north-easterly then east to get to the marina at Cres. The prevailing wind will likely be behind you at some point, and you can score bonus points for goose-winging your sails. You’ll notice the fine countryside on the coast and islands as you sail around, and it’s likely that this scenery hasn’t changed for hundreds of years.

The marina at Cres is on the far side of town, so you’ll get a great view of the old town (and it’s churches and 16th century Venetian tower) as you sail by. There’s plenty of places to eat and drink – particularly around the old harbour, at the centre of the old town, where you can sit and watch the fisherman preparing their boats for a busy night at sea.

Osor

Depending upon your tactics, you could take your time and stop at a beach on the way or make the distance straightaway then anchor in the bay just north of Osor for a swim whilst you wait for the time to pass before getting back on the boat before 5pm. At 5pm, priority should be given to boats coming from the South.

Osor is a tiny walled town which doesn’t look like much, but was once the centre-point of Roman trade in the area. Originally Cres and Losinj were one island, but the Romans dug the canal between the islands and renamed them. Osor was an important bishopric in their empire, and was still important well into the middle-ages, when a plague hit the town and the great explorers found more exciting trade routes to America, India and China.Nowadays, it’s a tranquil tourist village, with museums, statues, and five or six different local “konoba” or restaurants, all serving reasonable grilled fish and other local cuisine.

Susak

We’re going to need to use the canal swing-bridge, which opens at 9am today, and will save you 12 nautical miles on having to sail the other way right around Losinj to Susak, so you’ll have to be on your toes early doors – even if most of the crew go back to bed once you’re out at sea. To get to Susak, it’s a sail southwards alongside the island of Losinj, and the small marina and port of Susak are on it’s Eastern side. You’ll be sailing close-hauled at times, and beating into the wind at others.

Susak is a beautiful place to spend the night, and is different to the other islands in the area – instead of vines and pines trees, the main plant in Susak is Oregano. Some people say they can smell it from miles out to sea. Despite the island having been inhabited for over two thousand years, there’s precious little known about the history of the island – mainly because we’re so far away from the mainland that proper schooling was only introduced in 1955, so no one could read or write. Coupled to that, a vast swathe of the population were forced off the island after world war two (on account of their Italian heritage, in communist Yugoslavia), so the oral history of the island was also lost.

Susak is a super-relaxing place to spend the night, and there’s a suprising number of restaurants given there’s only a population of 200 people, and the chief mode of transport on the island is walking along dusty, sandy paths.

Pula

From Susak, we’re bearing in a North-westerly direction towards the land on the horizon, where people headed to Pomer will head for their marina, whilst those in Pula will follow the Istrian headland further north-west before turning in. In the prevailing summer winds, you should find yourself reaching, so it’s possible to get from Susak in pretty much one tack.

When you’re back at your marina, you’ll need to refuel the yacht (this is easy in Pomer as our agents will do this for you as there is no fuel berth, but for Pula, the fuel dock is to the East of the marina in Pula) before returning it from where it came. You’ll need to be back in good time on the Friday evening to allow our partners to inspect the boat, but you’ll be able to sleep on the yacht or catamaran tonight and do the formal check-out in the morning.

If you haven’t yet explored the local town, then now is a great time to do so, and you’ll likely find plenty of other excited sailors out sharing their stories from their own adventures at sea. It’s also their last night, so it should be a lively night in the local bars. Hopefully you’ve had a wonderful and relaxing holiday, everyone is even better friends than a week ago, and you’re already talking about your next great adventure

Sailing Conditions

Croatia Sailing - Wind Conditions

During the summer season, the winds are so reliable that the locals claim they can set their watch by them – they tend to blow from 9am to 12pm, then there is a mid-day lull (the locals say that the winds ‘go for lunch’), before returning with greater force from around 3pm until sunset. After sunset, the winds tend to die right down, so you shouldn’t have too many issues with loose ropes clanking through the night.

If you get further out into the Adriatic channel, the wind shoots down from Venice to the centre of the Mediterranean – but close to the Croatian islands and the coastline, the mistral winds of the summer tend to prevail in a landwards direction, towards the mainland.

Pula - Average Temperature

We operate out of 4 marinas in or around Pula - they are all within easy distance of the airport, and all offer excellent facilities to visiting sailors.

If you're staying in the area before or after your charter, we can recommend these places in Pula - Hotel Amfiteater or Guest House Rock Depadance . If you're staying in Pomer then Rooms Villa Rosa Medulin or Apartments Goga Pomer are good options.

Start your yacht charter in Pula and witness an up-and-coming charter destination in the Croatian Adriatic sea. Thanks to its rich history, Pula has plenty to offer, in terms of culture and activities. The most notable residents of Pula were the Romans, who left behind a treasure-trove of architectural heritage, with the number one monument in Pula surely being the Arena.

This largest Roman amphitheatre is Pula`s top landmark and a must-visit location for all travellers passing near Pula. Besides archaeological sites, this fantastic city also hides many contemporary secrets between its many narrow stone streets and small town square.

When going on a yacht charter in Pula, it is more than recommended to check out points of interest in the Istrian peninsula. Between so many locations to choose from, you can always rely on your local yacht crew to give the best advice regarding what to see and do. Experience only the best parts of Pula`s wider area and spend an unforgettable yacht charter vacation in Croatia.

Thanks to a local charter crew, you will have the best pick of quaint little towns along the coastline of the peninsula, with many different bays and coves perfect for anchoring your yacht charter. Italian influences are noticeable on the entire Istrian peninsula and particularly in Pula, where many cultural crossovers have transformed Pula`s culture into a truly unique blend.

Pula is situated at the very tip of Istria , the largest peninsula in Croatia , known for charming hilltop villages and excellent agriculture that grows exquisite produce and wonderful local specialities.

The interior of the peninsula is filled with lush green foliage, above which small mesa-built towns paint a lovely panoramic picture. These fairytale-like towns all have something special to offer, whether it be an indigenous wine sort, a special dish or some interesting piece of history, all wrapped around in a charming medieval atmosphere.

Istria`s coastline is littered with countless coves and bays, which are all perfect targets for a yacht charter to anchor in and enjoy a completely private atmosphere, combined with a clean sea and healthy and diverse vegetation. Nurturing a cosmopolitan and multicultural approach to tourism, Istria offers a different take on the Croatian Adriatic; instead of an archipelago of countless islands and islets, there are several dozen pristine islands and countless bays.

There are numerous coastal towns along Istria`s coast worth checking out, like Umag, Rovinj, Poreč, Novigrad and the coupe de grace- Pula , home to the largest Roman Amphitheatre on the Adriatic, seconded only to the one in Rome. Imagine standing in the place where history was written and where emperors enjoyed bloody gladiator games and dangerous chariot races, and feel like a part of a bigger historic whole.

WHY CHARTER IN PULA

Pula is an extraordinary Croatian coastal town and there are many reasons for this statement, starting from its location. Nestled at the southernmost tip of the Istrian peninsula, Pula`s geostrategic position has brought this seaside settlement attention from many empires and kings over the centuries.

Because of its location, Pula was in the perfect position to control maritime trade in the entire northern Adriatic – both the Greeks and the Romans recognized this fact and built their structures, temples and monuments in Pula, most of which can still be seen today.

In medieval times, Pula was the first part of the Croatian Kingdom, then the Austro-Hungarian Empire, before falling into Italian hands. This is where Pula, and the entirety of the Istrian peninsula, got their strong ties to Italian culture and everything Italian – even being declared a bi-lingual zone (where locals speak both Italian and Croatian).

Ties to Italy had directed the variety and quality of Pula`s touristic offer, starting from yacht charter in Pula. The cuisine has strong Italian influences, in the way pasta and seafood are prepared and served, while the interior of the Istrian peninsula is regarded as “Little Tuscany”. One cannot talk about Pula without mentioning the Istrian peninsula, the biggest Croatian peninsula, located in the Croatian northwest, bordering Slovenia on its northern side.

This peninsula offers countless options for experiencing fun and excitement in the interior, thanks to the assistance from your yacht charter crew. That could mean that your dedicated charter crew or your experienced SuperYachts Croatia broker can arrange a tour of the Istrian peninsula using luxurious supercar rentals or aeroplanes. There are many possibilities for adventures, like horseback riding, archery, free climbing, but also more leisure activities like wine tours, gourmet classes and or truffle-hunting.

Pula becomes a literal beehive of activities during the summer, which range from cultural and music manifestations to historic shows, film festivals, movie screenings and other forms of entertainment. During your yacht charter in Pula, do not miss the numerous unique opportunities to witness the fun and cultural side of this coastal city. The best and most commonly used venue for all of Pula`s events is the Arena , where spectators sit in the same seats that the ancient Romans used to occupy.

WHEN TO CHARTER IN PULA

Depending on what you want to do, the best time for a yacht charter in Pula would be between May and September. If you are planning on staying near the coastline and only experiencing the aquatic side of Pula , then sunny days and warm temperatures are what you seek; these are prevalent in the peak of the summer season, between June and August.

There is a downside to chartering a yacht in Pula at this time; plenty of crowds and tourists gather from all over the world to bask in the magnificence that is Pula`s old core and the surrounding natural beauties it possesses. If you are looking for a more balanced charter experience, you could come in May or late September, when the temperatures are more balanced and there are fewer people in general.

The weather around Pula is predominantly dry, with daily temperatures not exceeding 30-35 degrees Celsius or about 90 Fahrenheit, between June and September. These temperatures are ideal for relaxing on a secluded part of Istria`s shoreline, with your superyacht charter nearby, enabling you to experience water sports in beautiful and private surroundings.

When it comes to the off seasons, the months of May and October offer more mild temperatures – about 20-25 degrees Celsius or about 70 degrees Fahrenheit, with recommendations for warmer clothes in the evening. The temperature of the sea at this time is considered to be too low for swimming, but there are always brave souls that are daring enough to feel the chilly embrace of the azure Croatian Adriatic.

Istria`s interior is what you would expect from any mainland – the farther you get into the interior, the more the weather conditions start separating from what you are used to when closer to shore. Istria starts to receive ample rainfall come October, which is perfect for growing many delicacies that thrive in abundance in Istria, like world-renowned wine, olive oil, asparagus, truffles and other mushrooms…

HOW TO GET TO PULA

There are several ways of getting to Pula . The roads are excellent, particularly if you come down from the North and just join the so-called “Istrian Y” because the road system resembles the letter Y. The most practical way of getting to Pula would be to board a crewed yacht charter in another location and just cruise into Pula harbour.

The airport for Pula is located about 5 kilometres from the city centre, offering numerous departures and arrivals from international and domestic flights. It is also the most significant airport on the Istrian peninsula. Ask your expert SuperYachts Charter advisor about the possibilities of arriving at Pula airport and the transit between the airport and your yacht charter in Pula.

Pula does also possess a train station and a railway system, but trains are not the most practical means of transportation on the Istrian peninsula. Because of its specific and irregular shape, it is hard to make railways compete with cars or other motorized transports.

Straight railways cannot hope to manoeuvre through the mass of hilltop villages, rivers, gorges and other natural obstacles that the peninsula consists of – the best means of transport would be SUVs, luxury sports cars, VIP transfers; anything on four wheels…

Most of Pula`s city centre can be explored on foot, without the need for any mode of transportation. This is particularly true about the old town core, which is a pedestrian-only zone.

There is some interesting history behind Brijuni as well: back when Croatia was a part of Yugoslavia, Brijuni was the favourite vacation spot for Josip Broz Tito , the ruler of the federative republic. When he spent time on Brijuni, he would also come by yacht, which was his vessel, appropriately named Seagull. On it, Tito would receive prominent leaders from all around the world, while cruising around the coast of Brijuni and Istria.

Discover Hilltop villages in Istra`s interior

Nestled on messas that protrude from the green landscape like towers of a huge city, these settlements provide a unique insight into how the local populace lived in the past.

Agriculture is more mechanized, but old secrets still adhere. Good tilled earth produces terrific wines and incredible olive oil, both of which are globally recognized and awarded with multiple prestigious ribbons for excellence and quality. Among all other villages, Motovun is by far the most beautiful and interesting of all. Located in the Mirna river valley, Motovun is the personification of a fairy-tale town.

Set on a hilltop, Motovun follows a circular plan, where cobblestone streets lead travellers to the top, from which an incredible 360 panorama of the entire valley can be observed. Adding to the wow factor are the city walls that the Venetians built in the 14th century, to keep this city safe from would-be attackers.

Contemporary Motovun is famous for hosting numerous film festivals during the summer, which attract all kinds of crowds, thanks to a wide range of different services, from camping and volunteering to glamping and VIP accommodation. This is achieved by mixing the cultural program with atmospheric architecture, including Gothic buildings and medieval towers, which house galleries, studios, boutiques and restaurants.

Outdoor enthusiasts can also venture into the nearby Motovun forest, in search of the famed Istrian truffles. The town of Pican has a history that reaches Ancient Rome, which is witnessed by its Latin name of Petena. During the medieval era, it was the seat for bishops – there are numerous medieval buildings and fortifications monuments still left to testify its historic importance. Located on a hilltop, Pican`s numerous restaurants and bars offer immaculate service, combined with picture-perfect panoramas.

Sightseeing Around Pula

Stroll on the streets that have felt countless feet stumble across them through the ages. Feel the historic atmosphere of Pula, as this city brings you closer to the past with its archaeological heritage and rich culture. Experience tales of the past told through many different perspectives, the most famous of which is, of course, the Roman Amphitheatre, widely recognized as the ‘Arena’ in Pula.

This magnificent structure dates back to the 1st century AD, completed by the Roman emperor Flavius. The amphitheatre is one of the largest in the Mediterranean, which is no surprise, considering its three-story structure could seat about 20,000 Romans. Although the Arena is impressive, it is not the oldest Roman monument in Pula; that honour falls to the Hercules Gate, dating from 1st century BC.

In the centre of Old Town, walking from the Arena, sightseers will eventually come to the Triumphal Arch of the Sergii, which commemorates Octavian`s victory in Greece, built around 30 BC by the Sergi family who fought alongside him.

The Temple of Augustus also celebrates Octavian and is located on the Forum, once the main focal point in the city. Today, the Forum is still buzzing with activity, thanks to numerous bars and restaurants. You could rest at one of many Forum`s cafes and enjoy your favourite drink as you watch colourful tourists and busy locals pass one another on this open piazza.

Moving onward through history, we arrive at the Zadar cathedral, the construction of which took centuries. Therefore, different parts of the cathedral are of different origins; some are Romanesque, some are Gothic, while the bell tower is from the 17th century. Besides cultural treasures, Pula also has some contemporary appeals, like the Pula Aquarium, which houses a Sea Turtle rescue centre, alongside more than 200 species of varied marine life.

Enjoy wonderful performances on one of many summer festivals in Pula

During the summer, Pula becomes a perfect stage for numerous open-air events, ranging from music and theatre to films and cultural festivals. The arena in Pula provides a unique background to enjoy wonderful performances from gifted artists and other masters of their craft, as well as hosting the International Pula Film festival, which is held under the stars.

Visitors can enjoy masterpieces of contemporary cinematography while being surrounded by the same stone that Roman emperors were when they enjoyed marvellous spectacles that were performed in this Amphitheater . Every June, famous actors and directors gather to watch their creation on the big screen – you can contact us anytime during your yacht charter in Pula about procuring tickets for the hottest show in town.

Pula also hosts two big electronic dance music festivals : Outlook, which assembles famous reggae and dubstep performers and Dimensions festival , which is more inclined towards hosting renowned DJs. This bay is perfect for snorkelling, as well as having fun with water toys from your yacht charter. Last but not least, Maračol bay on Unije island offers a coastline that shelters anchoring yachts, while also providing pretty panoramas and 50 anchoring buoys with depths below 15 meters.
