The Best Charter Yachts for 12 Guests and Above

Superyachts by their very definition are mammoth, so why then can charter vessels often only accommodate comparatively few? The answer largely lies in PYC regulations which limits their capacity, as adhering to them can mean extensive costs, testing, and possible refits. Consequently, many owners refrain from going above the legal limit of 12 passengers plus crew. So whilst an 80m yacht with 10 staterooms might be able to sleep 20 guests, for charter it can often only offer the same as a 50m yacht with 6 staterooms for up to 12 guests. But what do you do if you want to charter a yacht for a party of 12 or more?

Larger charter vessels that meet PYC rules do exist. But make no mistake that adhering to PYC directives is a delicate tiptoe between style and substance. The charter superyachts featured below make this appear effortless: artfully crafting formidable spaces for large parties whilst still retaining the paradisiacal ambiance and character that such vessels are cherished for.

Here's our round-up of the best charter yachts available for 12 guests or more.

Charter yacht Legend

A former Soviet icebreaker, the 77m (253ft) motor yacht LEGEND metamorphosed into a powerful, rock-like explorer vessel in 2016, when she was refitted with chartering in mind. Up to 22 people can quench their thirst for epic odysseys on this ship (with capacity for 28 crew and 10 additional staff) across 13 lavishly appointed suites, each representing a sultry, sartorially different universe. While no two rooms are the same, all are linked by their sizzling drama: think intricately carved wood scenes on the ceiling and humbug striped seating that merges into a pool of monochromatic marble below, and all contained by rich mahogany paneling. Her eye-poppingly ornate interiors are paired with elaborate features, including a whisky bar, cigar room, 14-seat cinema and a complete Balinese spa offering almost every wellness aspect you could think of.

No two rooms are the same, with each representing a sultry, sartorially different universe

Outdoor jacuzzi onboard superyacht Legend

From the last great ivory wilderness of Antarctica to Northern Europe 's chiseled fjords painted in big, bold brushstrokes of green, all can be experienced in the bubbling warmth of a 16-person, waterfall-fed, outdoor jacuzzi on the main deck. Combined with her bonanza of tenders and water toys (no less than two helicopters, 4 jet skis, one submarine, two wakeboards, two paddleboards plus snowmobiles) she's primed for practically every adventure imaginable.

Legend Yacht

Built to enthrall, the echoes of her former life as a 100-passenger cruise vessel are seen in truly exceptional entertainment zones spanning four decks. Sleeping 36 guests across 20 cabins (with room for up to 40 crew) and with a sprawling guest area of 1,800 sq meters, 90m (296ft) superyacht LAUREN L is for those seeking to dazzle their parties with every possible whim catered to.

Her highlights include a staggeringly comprehensive health and beauty center in its own right, featuring a beauty and hair salon, massage room, and an aromatherapy treatment room. But her crowning jewel is undoubtedly the spa, where one can leisurely soak admiring the ever-changing vistas from floor-length windows in a lavender mist, before gazing at their miniature onboard ocean in the aquarium located in the relaxation room.

Lauren L Yacht

Opulent living is undoubtedly 80m (263ft)  motor yacht ELEMENTS  modus operandi , masterfully evoked through designer Cristiano Gatto's Islamic and Ottoman architectural flourishes in a muted palette of arctic silvers and icy blues. Eyes trace from floor to ceiling a spectacular multitude of materials across four voluminous decks: where mother-of-pearl inlays are jointly presented alongside intricate mosaics, hand-tufted carpets and backlit onyx. This intensity is magnified in the sunlight-drenched main saloon, which is designed to be the epicenter of activity on this yacht. Pillars are draped in Italian marble giving structure to the undulating layout of the room, replete with as many intimate corners as it has wide, welcoming spaces.

Opulent living is undoubtedly ELEMENTS modus operandi

Superyacht Elements cruising the water

Built in 2018, she sleeps up to 24 guests across 12 staterooms. The grand owner's suite located forward is the focal point on this vessel, with the option of converting the VIP cabins on the same deck into a huge, all-encompassing family apartment featuring an office, cinema, private Jacuzzi and bar all cradled by wraparound windows.

Elsewhere, her beach club is clad with a hammam and massage room to pamper guests whenever their heart desires, and on the foredeck, a throng of sunloungers cover the helipad when not in use. Plus, she has an entire armada of water toys to choose from when the open water beckons.

Christina O

The silhouettes of the world's most glittering icons are forever etched into its glamorous soul

The silhouettes of the world's most glittering icons are forever etched into its glamorous soul. Purchased in 1954, Christina O's former owner (Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis) transformed her from a Canadian anti-submarine frigate into a golden pleasure palace, single-handedly crafting the superyacht playbook for living la dolce vita. Decades on, she still embodies the tycoon's vivacious spirit, tempered by the timeless grace of his wife, Jackie Kennedy.

Decorated in a distinct English country manor style, the 99m (325ft) motor yacht Christina O is capable of carrying up to 34 guests across 17 cabins, and a whopping 38 crew can attend to every need. Last refitted in 2018, her original, undeniably indulgent finishes — such as the orca teeth carved into the walls and the whale skin stools in Ari's bar —  still remain intact. Her much-loved minotaur mosaic swimming pool cum dance floor, the Onassis Suite, and concert room have also been carefully restored.

Moonlight II

Charter yacht Moonlight II on water with tender

No need to reduce your guest list with 91m (299ft)  superyacht Moonlight II : up to 36 guests can call this stately beauty their floating abode, amid 18 plush cabins. The embodiment of grandeur, her interior refit in 2015 (expertly helmed by Greek designer Lally Poulias) suffuses Grecian flair with aplomb across more than 2,400 square meters of guest space.

Santorini's unforgettable domed churches tinted azure and whitewashed, fig-fragranced lanes come to mind when marveling her outdoor areas: which includes a beach club, sun deck complete with a jacuzzi, al-fresco dining, and a bar that can be converted it a helipad space for last-minute getaways.

Bursting with entertainment options (featuring a cinema and gentleman's club) she also offers one of the most extensive spa facilities of any yacht charter. Her health and beauty center is filled with every conceivable luxury to cater to every need: from soothing tired toes to resting sun-baked limbs. Features include a massage room, plunge pools, salon, and sauna. There's also a thrilling amount of water toys to whip out for when adrenaline-fuelled capers call.

O'Mega

She commands attention as one of the world's most polished charter vessels

Superyacht O'Mega sun loungers

Once a cruise ship, now reborn as 83m (271ft) superyacht O'MEGA , she commands attention as one of the world's most polished charter vessels. Built in 1987 by Mitsubishi before her refit in 2015, she comfortably accommodates up to 30 guests across 14 staterooms, all of which benefit from lavishly large windows so guests can revel in their floating oasis in complete seclusion.

Her interiors are all high-gloss mahogany, fluted pillars, and pools of sumptuous silk across six expansive decks. O'MEGA oozes elegance at every turn, but hints of modernity are peppered throughout, evidenced with her state-of-the-art cinema.

Italian design house Studio Vafiadis has adeptly led both exterior and interior styling and bestowed guests with truly majestic outdoor spaces. Notably, the expansive alfresco dining area on the aft deck and on the sun deck, where a fully-stocked bar can rustle up a margarita or two whilst you sink shoulder-deep into Jacuzzi bubbles.

Charterers can dive into the twinkling blue or jet off one of O'MEGA's myriad tenders and toys from her retractable swim platform.

What is a Catamaran?

What is a Catamaran?

A catamaran is defined as a boat with two hulls that connect to a structured bridging - which serves as the boat’s deck .   In a catamaran, the staterooms and respective  head s are housed with in the two hulls, while the deckhouse typically  features a navigational ‘cockpit’ ,   saloon , and galley.   Also referred to as a cat, these types of boats offer either  sailing or power capabilities - or both .

The origins of a Catamaran date back to the 17 th  century . D esigned as a raft   consisting of two logs connected by planks,  they were used by natives in the  Indonesian A rchipelago  and  S outh  P acific for the purpose of  fishing, visiting ,  war, and exploration. These primitive catamarans originally paddled by a group of men ( and , eventually outfitted with a sail ) ,  have since evolved into one of the most innovative and  revered  sailboats in the world.

Today’s catamarans have seen an increased demand and  popularity for vacationers looking to rent a spacious sailboat , sailors who want to cruise the world  on a bareboat catamaran charter - even sailboat enthusiasts looking for fun daytime adventure  on a small er  sailing cat .

12 Knots offers over 11,000  modern catamarans for charter in 36 locations around the world . Modern cruising catamarans not only  provide stability  and excellent sailing performance - they also offer   comfortable  cabins , as well as functional , spacious  deck s -often outfitted with netting ideal for sunbathing .

The Popularity of Chartering a Catamaran

So, what makes a catamaran charter so popular? In addition to a number of appealing attributes, there are also  many advantages when you chose to rent a catamaran for your next sailing adventure:

Advantages :

Space -   Catamarans have about 2 times the space than their monohull counterpart s - offering   an extensive  deck ing and a much more comfortable  and spacious interior area  with up to 4 cabins, as well as ample room for storage .   A catamaran’s living space also  sits above the water line which increases a better flow of air circulation /ventilation , more light , and fabulous views.

Stability  -   The design of a catamaran’s  twin  parallel hulls creates a natural stability . This results in less  bobbing  on the waves -providing  a smoother ride. This  is beneficial to travelers who are prone to seasickness or those traveling with children or elderly passengers .

Greater  Speed   -   With the absence of a keel and a lower wetted surface area ,  catamarans are much lighter than their monohull counterparts enabling them to reach higher speeds  (sometimes up to 50% faster) -especially when their  sails are  kept perpendicular to the wind .

Maneuverability -  Twin engines located in each hull , along with its two rudders,  allows for greater  maneuverability   with the ability to turn 360 degrees within the length of the boat. This is a great advantage when trying to dock in a narrow marina.

Shallow D raft  -   Unlike a monohull, a cat amaran  can anchor in almost any bay.  The absence of a keel results in having a lower /shallow draft which enables a cat to  venture  closer to shore- this feature is  advantageous  when exploring  coral reefs and the many islands  throughout the  Caribbean .

Fuel -  Even with twin engines, a catamaran charter can be economical when they rely on the ir sails  and the wind.

Safety  -   Without a keel, cats are  virtually unsinkable ;  because unlike a monohull, the chances of them hitting something in the water and causing damage to the boat are much less unlikely .   A modern catamaran built of light weight foam construction will  also provide greater buoyancy on the water. A catamaran’s flat deck also makes it safer and easier for passengers (and pets) to move about  the boat when it is sailing .

Disadvantages :

While there are certainly many advantages when you charter a catamaran, there can also be a few disadvantages .

Sailing   -   With the absence of a keel,  sailing a cat  is sometimes more challenging because they can’t sail as high into the wind as a monohull. Catamarans can also experience  issues with  maintaining momentum because  they are more difficult to tack.

Docking   -   Unlike their  monohull  counterpart, the wide width design of a catamaran will  require  more room to dock ;   b ecause they take up  a greater amount of space,  docking options may be limited and fees are often doubled.

Fuel consumption  -  Compared to a monohull, fuel consumption can be greater because of a catamaran’s twin engines.

Noise  -   A catamaran ’ s design of a wide deck strapped between two hulls can sometimes  cause an irritating slapping  or pounding sound - especially  while  sailing  in rough er  seas .

Safety  -  Unlike monohulls that were designed to correct themselves if they flip-over, cats are much more difficult to correct if they turn upside down.

Price  -  Depending on the boat itself, catamarans for charter can be more expensive than monohull sailboat rentals because of all the benefits they offer.

Cost of a Catamaran Charter

The total cost of renting a catamaran is considerably less than most people think- it is  comparable to a weeks’ vacation at an all-inclusive  beach  resort.

The cost to charter a catamaran will always vary, but on the average, they usually run anywhere from $2,500 to 35,000 per week. The price of a catamaran rental will always  be determined by  the following factors:

Catamaran size , age and model

Destination

Duration of trip

Season/time of year  (high season vs low/off season)

Amenities - such as kayaks, jet skis, diving and snorkeling equipment

Bareboat or crewed- Bareboat charters will always be less expensive than a crewed charter

For the best price and value for your money, you’ll want to contact 12 Knots to take advantage of their booking discounts and charter special offers

Finding the Right Catamaran Rental

Popular models of catamarans for rent ( cruising and sport ) :

Lagoon

Catana

Fountain Pajot

Corsair

CraigCat

Nautitech

Privilege

Megayacht Catamarans

Depending on your purpose for chartering a catamaran, it will be important to know the two types ,  as well as their functionality and characteristics :

Cruising  catamarans

If your goal is a tranquil and relaxing vacation , cruising charter catamarans are the perfect choice.

Use only the wind and sails as its source of energy- which makes it one of the most environmentally friendly boat types .  Cruising catamarans that have engines generally only use them when necessary.

Ideal for both couples and families  (safer option for families travelling with children and elderly passengers) .

Known for their stability, reliability , and speed

Popular choice for bareboat catamaran charters and crewed charters because they provide ample living space, comfortable cabins , and a netted deck area perfect for sunbathing .

Sport catamarans

Ideal for rac es and regattas

Need proficient sailing skills and manpower to operate (crewed)

Known for achieving high  speed s and exceptional  maneuverability

Offer performance  and functionality over comfort

Best Catamaran Charter  Destinations

Some of the best destinations for catamaran charters are: Caribbean, South East Asia ,   Greece ,  Sardinia, and  Croatia .

These locations are favorable because anchorage and moorings are  generally plentiful and easy to access rather  than  marinas in  the Mediterranean -  which are typically more crowded ; and, quite often , will  charge you double the price for docking space because the size of your boat.

Charter Sailboat Requirements

Bareboat catamaran charter s in most countries will require a license to operate  the vessel . However, in the United States, France, and the Caribbean a license is not necessary -  but documentation stating your experience and sailing history is required. Of course, that shouldn’t stop you from chartering a catamaran as you can always choose to book a skipper for your  sailing vacation.

12 Best Catamaran Sailboats

Best Catamaran Sailboats | Life of Sailing

Last Updated by

Daniel Wade

December 28, 2023

The appeal of the catamaran sailboats in terms of speed , stability, and the ability to embark on long-range cruising has made them hugely popular with today's sailors. But what are the best catamaran sailboats?

Even though catamaran sailboats have become increasingly popular in the last few years, they have a truly rich legacy as one of the most sought after vessels for bluewater cruising.

Thanks to their incredibly wide beams and bigger daft, catamarans have become remarkably favorable for sailors looking to go for long-distance voyages, overnight cruising, and day sailing.

And if space is paramount for you when out there on the water, a catamaran sailboat is the only way to go as they offer extraordinary space to allow you to spend more time on the water with friends and family.

But even with all these amazing features, you're probably still wondering; what are the best catamaran sailboats?

Like their monohull counterparts, choosing the best catamaran sailboat can be quite overwhelming since there are lots of them out there. They come in a wide variety of designs and sizes ranging from small catamarans to huge ones.

The best catamaran sailboats can easily clock 250-mile voyages, offer incredible performance, and have layouts that can be easily optimized for individuals, charter markets, and great accommodation. In essence, the best catamaran sailboats offer respectable performance and offer good load-carrying ability.

That being said, here are some of the best catamaran sailboats that you can get your hands on.

Best Catamarans

{{boat-info="/boats/manta-42"}}

Even though many multihulls are no longer built in the United States these days, the Manta 42 is a true American-built catamaran that brings good living and good value into one package. Designed cleverly for easy handling, this American built catamaran is a great choice for a liveaboard cruiser for sailors looking to go for long-distance voyages. Thanks to its trademark high bows and an enormously curved incorporated forward crossbeam, this catamaran is easily recognizable even from a distance.

It is designed with a uniquely fixed crossbeam, which is very different from conventional aluminum cross beams that support the tension of the forestay. This fixed crossbeam allows for a little bit of movement thereby helping in absorbing enormous twisting forces of the bows. As such, you have to keep in mind that there may be resultant stress crack particularly in the bow area of the vessel.

All in all, the Manta 42 is a superb offshore cruising catamaran that offers a good sail-area-to-displacement ratio as well as plenty of space and accommodation. The cockpit area is refined, luxurious, and is designed with additional stainless pushpit contraptions to help in holding objects such as wind vanes, dinghies, and solar panels. The boat's quality in terms of performance and stability is the benchmark of what a catamaran should be.

Fountaine Pajot Elba 45

{{boat-info="/boats/fountaine-pajot-elba-45"}}

Recently named the "Boat of the Year" for 2019 by Cruising World Magazine and Sail Magazine, the Elba 45 is the latest model in the incredible line of Fountaine Pajot catamarans. This boat was designed to replace the outgoing Helia 44 and stands to be one of the most popular catamarans with Fountain Pajot having sold over 100 Elba 45 hulls long before even the first one emerged from production.

This French-built cat brings to the fore a well-thought-out, safe, and dependable features with 10% less drag, efficient motoring, top-notch performance, and high speeds. It's also designed with fixed stub keels and slightly aft-raked bows, which are all essential in enhancing windward performance; something that most catamarans struggle with.

To improve on safety, the keels of this amazing catamaran sailboat are glued into a particularly designed recess in the hulls. This is to ensure that there are no keel bolts that can rip out and put the boat in danger if the boat gets grounded or in the event of a collision. The rig is also ICW friendly and is a true representation of a standard catamaran setup.

This is, without a doubt, a modern-looking cruising catamaran that has a low-profile lounging space on its deck, high topsides and bows as well as a more pronounced reverse sheer that's essential in minimizing the bulk of the windows while creating additional and useful volume below. This is a true catamaran that occupies a sweet spot for those looking to sail along the bay or for those adventurous sailors looking to set sail for more ambitious offshore cruising plans.

{{boat-info="/boats/leopard-48"}}

With its fine design, straightforward systems, and easy handling, the Leopard 48 has everything it needs to be ranked among the distinguished category of the best catamaran sailboats. This is an excellent multihull that is structured with advanced materials, designs, and innovations that are meant to be fun, spacious, and comfortable.

Designed in South Africa by Simonis-Voogd, is probably the best design in the Leopard family of catamarans. Its two hulls are vacuum-bagged using balsa core to offer maximum firmness while ensuring that the weight is on the minimum. This is done by articulately regulating the level of resin in the layup. With such types of hull shapes, this catamaran sailboat is very fast and can consistently clock 12 knots of speed against the currents.

The boat is also designed with shallow keels as they're filled with closed-cell polyurethane foam that's of great importance in increasing buoyancy and preventing water ingress. To enhance the safety of the vessel, the stern and bow both have bulkheads that are essential in keeping out that water if the sailboat is involved in a collision.

The hulls of this boat are deep and narrow, particularly below the waterline. They also curve higher up to practically reduce the wetted surface area while offering enough deck space and plenty of room for accommodations. Its cockpit is another excellent feature thanks to its lavish spaces that give you the chance of kicking back and relaxing.

This boat is designed to offer superior livability, quick and easy to handle features, as well as enough space for friends and family. It is designed with beautiful lines and immense practicality for those who want to go on long cruising voyages.

Antares 44i

While many people often believe that voluminous cruising catamarans should be used as charter boats, the Antares 44i brings a very different perspective altogether. Designed in Argentina as a complete bluewater catamaran, this is a boat that's specifically built for private boat owners looking for a sturdy and well-equipped bluewater cruiser. This is an absolutely gorgeous catamaran that has a fully-equipped cockpit just to ensure that you can safely operate it even when shorthanded.

Like most catamarans, the Antares 44i is designed with features that allow for long-distance voyages. It comes with a minimum bridge deck clearance of 30 inches, which is essential in mitigating bridge deck slap. The helm station is designed to offer excellent visibility over the coach roof without having to perch the helmsman high above the cockpit.

If you're planning to make those long-distance cruising to exotic places, you'll appreciate this boat's layout. The galley is put down in the port hull so that it doesn't compromise the size of the galley and the saloon. The forward-facing navigation station is up there with the best and is up to offshore standards. And that's not all; the Antares 44i comes with good mounting points for electronics, a large table, comfortable seats, and provides brilliant visibility outside.

This boat is perfectly suited for extended offshore cruising and is a great reminder for anyone who thinks that all catamarans are charter boats and all offshore boats are monohulls.

{{boat-info="/boats/dolphin-ocema-42"}}

Designed by Philipe Pouvreau in northern Brazil, the Dolphin Ocema 42 is a truly unique catamaran sailboat that goes against the conventional norm of catamarans. It is equipped with daggerboards, which are essential in enabling it to point higher on the wind while reducing the wetted surface when running or anchoring in shallow surfaces. This, however, requires a higher level of expertise in sailing. This is because lifting the daggerboards higher up will expose the rudders while the daggerboards can also interfere with the hulls in the event that the vessel runs aground.

But even with that, the Dolphin 42 balances incredible performance and cruising comfort in a very compact package; something that is not very easy in bluewater cruising. That's why it's designed using a foam core to make it lightweight by reducing weight wherever possible. This vessel will most likely never let you down if you want to circumnavigate the bluewater on a high-performance boat that is safe and comfortable.

So if you've been looking for a real sailing catamaran that doubles up as a very comfortable liveaboard sailboat , look no further than the Dolphin 42.

{{boat-info="/boats/catana-50"}}

Regarded as the best built and most stylish cruising multihull, the Catana 50 is a very huge catamaran sailboat. Measuring about 50 feet long with a beam of about 26 feet, this is an amazing catamaran that will test your sailing skills as a single sailor or if you're planning to sail shorthanded.

This boat is designed with a rig that gives you the option of using either a screecher or a self-tending jib. This may seem complex since the sheets are led to winches near each wheel while all other controls lead to a centerline winch that's located in the cockpit. But even with that, this sailboat can be easily tacked once on the course.

This is a real performance-oriented catamaran with efficient hulls and rigs allowing for top speed. This vessel is also designed with a long waterline and a subtle underwater shape at the bow to help in increasing volume while minimizing wave drag. The stern platforms can help in stretching the waterline length while also providing easy access from a dock or a dinghy. The board trunks are also very strong and sturdy to protect the integrity of the hulls if a collision occurs.

In essence, this is a very modern catamaran that's designed to safely make long-distance passages with ease. It is subdued in terms of styling but this doesn't mean that it falls short as far as performance is concerned.

Atlantic 42

{{boat-info="/boats/atlantic-42"}}

Designed in 1993, the A42 has cultivated a legion of fiercely loyal fans thanks to its efficiency and aesthetic. This is the smallest of the Atlantic cruising catamaran line and is hugely popular with sailors thanks to its ease of handling, ocean-going capabilities, and superb use of space. From the forward cockpit, pilothouse to the sleeping cabins, and brilliant galleys everything about this cat is a true classic.

Unlike most catamarans, the Atlantic 42 is designed with a waist-high cockpit that's located forward of the pilothouse just behind the mast. It brings forth a solid construction thanks to the large metal girder-like bearers that run across the bulkheads. This helps the vessel in having the utmost strength, better air circulation under the engine, and a high level of flexibility as far as the size of the engine and its positioning is concerned.

Initially, the boat's style and its outlook were considered conservative but it soon became clear that it is built of high-quality materials and to last. The internal construction of the boat is impressive, to say the least. The exterior looks very beautiful and perhaps much more beautiful than most boats today. Its large aft cabin accommodation is a top drawer while the space separating en suite heads and shower compartments are considered a bonus.

{{boat-info="/boats/fountaine-pajot-bahia-46"}}

If you were to board the French-built Fountaine Pajot Bahia 46, you'll agree that the high-quality of workmanship, layout, and efficient use of space is quite exciting, to say the least. This cat remains very popular among sailors thanks to its easy handling features and incredible performance under the sails. Well, this may not come as a surprise to many of us given that the Fountain Pajot is known for building some of the most remarkable cruising catamarans out there that it can be quite overwhelming to narrow down to a single vessel, but the Bahia 46 simply stands out.

This vessel is designed with hulls that are broader than those of many other catamarans. It's also designed with centerboards and daggerboards that are meant to enhance its performance. These are essential in minimizing draft while ensuring reliability, generous bilge, and in helping to protect the rudders and propellers.

This boat is big enough to manage any type of serious offshore sailing. This is one of the best cruising catamarans for anyone looking for the right vessel for long-distance sailing. This vessel has a very more generous rig than most cruising catamarans, which is essential in enhancing its performance. The six-post Bimini is very strong and clean and can perfectly hold dinghies.

In terms of its look, the Bahia 36 is designed with gorgeous lines with the deck and hulls sculpted with lines that add a touch of elegance to the overall look of an already excellent catamaran sailboat.

Gemini 105MC

{{boat-info="/boats/gemini-105mc"}}

Whether you're looking for a comfortable catamaran vessel to take you for a weekend sailing trip or a long sabbatical vacation on the oceans, the Gemini 105MC is a very satisfactory liveaboard catamaran vessel that offers spacious accommodation, thoughtful design, and a stable cruising platform for anyone who wants to have some good time on the water.

Designed by the legendary Tony Smith, this is somewhat a sailing cottage. Like a land cottage, it is cozy, comfortable, and very safe. This is essentially a 35 feet catamaran that offers great value for any sailing looking for a reasonably-priced catamaran sailboat for the weekend or holiday cruising.

This boat is designed with incredibly slim hulls, which are teardrop-shaped with flat bottoms and smaller wetted surface area. This is to ensure that drag is minimized and to lead to more leeway under sail. Each of the boat's hull is designed with a kick-up centerboard is of great importance in enhancing the vessel's windward pointing capability. This boat also has its rudders raised to enable it to seamlessly cruise in shallow waters where most vessels would otherwise run aground.

The eccentric narrow beam, which measures about 40% of the boat's length, is very different from today's 50%. However, its low center helps in keeping its stable, upright, and of course, safe.

Lagoon 450 F

{{boat-info="/boats/lagoon-450-f"}}

If you're looking for a catamaran sailboat that offers prestige at its peak, look no further than the Lagoon 450. This cat is widely known for offering an all-around comfort without compromising its beauty, spaciousness, class, and elegance. This is an elaborate French catamaran that brings to the table fantastic craftsmanship while leaving nothing to chance.

This is a very safe 45 feet catamaran that's not just comfortable but also very luxurious. The deck layout is centered on an amazing flybridge, which has been redesigned and redefined to offer both the traditional and modern outlook. You can very easily access the bridge, engine controls, steering station in a matter of seconds. As a result, this boat is efficiently designed to give you the ultimate control of almost every situation while on the water.

The spacious and luxurious interior of this boat is worth experiencing. The cabins and saloons are perfectly lit. We're talking about four to six cabins, eight to twelve berths, and up to four bathrooms. In essence, this boat can comfortably sleep eight to twelve people. This boat is designed to offer ultra-modern accommodations and amenities that come with little but amazing touches; all designed to make your life inside the catamaran enjoyable.

{{boat-info="/boats/gunboat-62"}}

An original performance catamaran cruiser from the iconic Gunboat manufacturer, the Gunboat 62 has truly cemented its place as one of the best catamaran sailboats to ever grace the oceans. Honestly speaking, this cat-inspired a whole range of other incredible boats including HH66 Catamaran and the Balance 526.

This is a boat that can perform admirably well in storms with a speed of over 35 knots despite being built using epoxy and E-glass with carbon-fiber structural components. It's designed with a distinct angular outline than most catamaran sailboats of its size and category. This is a vessel that was built for people looking to add more stuff and more gear for their voyages. In other words, you can have all the gear and equipment on this boat and still outperform a racing monohull of the same size.

Thanks to its lightweight feature, this vessel can sail upwind at speeds of over 17 knots and pinch up to 30 degrees. Just for comparison, the Gunboat 62 can tack through 95 degrees and still outperform the best racing monohulls. This boat is designed with a comfortable helm seat that offers 360-degree visibility as well as plenty of storage space, a functional working surface, and a luxurious cabin. Like many performance catamarans, the Gunboat 62 can attain about 20 knots if the conditions are right.

Privilege 615

{{boat-info="/boats/privilege-615"}}

Combining elegance, comfort, and style, the Privilege 615 is a lovely catamaran sailboat that seems to be always ready for a long offshore voyage. The roots of this incredible cat can be traced back to the 1980s when Philippe Jeantot opened up a boat-building company in France. As one of the best productions from the company, the privilege 615 sports a flybridge that comes complete with twin wheels, a sprawling sunbed, and other excellent features that will make your bluewater cruising a breeze.

Whether you want the charter version or a privately-owned version, the Privilege 615 is one of the most versatile catamaran sailboats. Step inside this vessel and you'll instantly notice the quality of the wood finish and the elegance of design. The advanced navigation station is not only ultra-modern but is perfectly stationed at a dedicated corner where you can control everything while still having a conversation with your friends and family.

This boat comes with multiple sleeping configurations to ensure that you and your guests can live aboard the boat for months on end. Although the boat appears like some sort of maze on the inside, you'll easily get used to it when you enter the forward section. That's not all; this boat has gorgeous lines that make the exterior beautiful just like the interior. Its sleek profile, incredible volume, and versatile interior make it one of the best catamaran sailboats out there.

There you have it; these are the best catamaran sailboats out there. It doesn't matter the one you choose, these cats will make your day out on the water and will serve you just right for your offshore voyages or for day sailing along the bays.

Going out on a pleasant and comfortable sail can be such a relaxing experience. Catamarans are especially great for romantic cruises due to their ample space and smooth sailing. If you’re looking to spend more time on the water with the wind in your hair, you might be considering getting a catamaran of your own. But what’s the best choice for couples?

The best catamarans for couples include the Lagoon 42, the Seventy 7, the Leopard 45, and the Antares 44GT.  Value for money is vital, but so is comfort. Catamarans for couples should be easy to handle, romantic, and not too big.

If you’re looking to spend some time away with the one you love, read on. We’ll discuss the ten best catamarans for couples, detailing each vessel and what you can expect in terms of size, style, and cost. If you’re lucky, you may find the catamaran of your dreams .

If you’re looking for a comfortable catamaran where you can relax with your partner, look no further than the Lagoon 42. The cockpit is nice and comfortable both physically and mentally. Everything has been perfectly planned out, from the proper use of space to the ease of circulation. But the cockpit isn’t even the most important part.

You’re able to have three or four double cabins with island double beds and bathrooms with a separate shower. There are large windows offering great illumination, so you won’t have to worry about it being too dim. Essentially, this watercraft has everything you need to be comfortable.

The interior has nicely molded wood that pairs well with the curved furniture, designed by Nauta. The design combines both elegance and functionality. If you’re looking for something that looks great and will provide comfort, the Lagoon 42 might be your best bet.

Expect to pay upwards of $300,000 for a used model.

For a catamaran that was apparently a challenge to build, you may want to read about the Seventy 7. All the different rooms connect, from the cabins to the deck and the trampoline forward. It follows an ample lifestyle and living space while also managing to look extremely comfortable. You’re going to get the whole cruising experience with the Seventy 7.

The interior has serious attention to detail, making sure you don’t miss a thing. The layout is optimized to create a brighter and more spacious living space. Since it’s brighter, you’ll be much more energized and enthusiastic to do more fun things on your trip. Some find that sailors tend to feel more exhausted in dimmer cabins and sleep more on the cruise. Since it’s spacious, you won’t feel cramped up at all, and you can relax.

There’s also a saloon with huge windows and a fantastic headroom that’ll give you a panoramic view of the ocean. The owner’s suite is private from the rest of the vessel, giving you quiet access to the sea. For this area, you can also get a private beach, but that is optional.

If that’s not enough to draw you in, this catamaran’s living space is flexible. You can move things around to add another private space in the owner’s suite that connects to the saloon and forward cockpit. Additionally, you can have up to five guest cabins with an island bed and desk each, perfect for storage spaces and private bathrooms.

Overall, this is a great choice for you and your partner if you want to be comfortable and relaxed.

This model is one of the more expensive options and will set you back more than $4 million brand new.

Fountaine Pajo t Isla 40

While this is better for family cruising, it’ll still be an amazing option for you and your partner. The Catamaran Isla 40 is a mythical experience leaving you feeling like the only people in the world. You’ll be able to connect with nature easily, considering your fantastic sea view, and will be at your utmost comfort level with soft seats and cloud-like bedding.

Dine on a smooth wooden table as you feel the ocean breeze or on the opposite side of the boat, where you can sit on the edge as the boat slowly cruises. You can even do some yoga stretches on the same side of the boat. If that’s not enough for you, you can even get off of the ship and onto an attached board to get a feel of the water.

There are various places to relax, so you’ll never get bored with the experience. Just sit back and relax with your partner as you slowly cruise on the peaceful ocean blue.

All in all, this is a fantastic choice for you and your partner if you’d like a relaxing getaway with various activities and fun experiences for the both of you.

On average, this model will cost a little under $500,000 .

Catamaran Astréa 42

This watercraft will help to elevate the importance of being together. From that alone, it’s quite obvious that this will be a great opportunity for you and your partner to get some alone time. The exterior is built to look elegant, making the inside stunning and spacious regardless of its small size.

Of course you love your partner, but sometimes personal space is important. Luckily for you, this boat offers both. Everything is connected; however, there is still a sense of privacy, and you’re able to move freely without any sort of restriction. You won’t feel cramped, and you won’t feel overwhelmed either.

On the roof at the helm station, you’ll notice a double seat near a sunbathing area. You can either soak up some rays with your partner, or one of you can sunbathe while the other relaxes on the seat. You can also stay in the cockpit with a griddle, or feel the ocean breeze on the footbridge.

If that’s not enough to win you and your partner over, just wait until you realize how comfortable it is. The lounge has huge windows that’ll give you just enough sunlight and energy. You’ll be torn between the comfort of your cabin and the sweet experience of the open sea. Plus, the bathrooms are beautiful with an Italian style, and the Owner’s Suite bathroom is huge.

Overall, this is a fantastic watercraft if you’re looking for a relaxing experience with just the right amount of comfort. Needless to say, you and your partner will be connected more than ever.

A fully loaded Catamaran Astréa 42 will cost a little under $600,000 .

Fountaine Pajot Saona 47

As soon as you look at the Catamaran Saona 47, you’ll notice it says “majestic.” They’re not wrong. Get ready to fall in love with the luxury experience of this watercraft.

On this cruising catamaran, everything is perfectly designed to help you and your partner feel connected. There are various places where you both can relax, including a beach club located on the rear platform, a place to sunbathe at the front or helm station, and a lounge deck.

Once you step in, you’ll never want to leave. You’ll notice the well-lit and comfortable saloon that even includes a perfectly fitted kitchen. Then, you’ll go to your cabin to unpack and be stunned by the maximized comfort you’ll experience. It’s even flexible, as you can have an Owner’s version with three cabins, including an Italian-style suite and bathroom, or you can go for the five-cabin option with five private spaces.

You’ll be surprised at all of the beautiful sights you’ll see from both inside and outside the watercraft. Combining luxury, comfort, and flexibility, this catamaran may just be the best choice for you and your partner.

Expect to pay upwards of $700,000 for this catamaran.

Fountaine Pajo t New 51

If you’re looking for a spacious catamaran that’ll keep you relaxed, the Catamaran New 51 might just be the one for you. The deck has tons of space for you and your partner to walk around freely, and there is also a comfortable saloon and cockpit.

Whether you’re at the galley or the cockpit, you’ll have easy ways to communicate across the entire cruising journey, helping you to feel free and uncramped. The watercraft also uses renewable energy through solar panels, which produce 2000 watts. These solar panels also fit the gorgeous lounge and sunbathing area.

On top of that, there’s tons of space in terms of storage and areas to relax. If that’s not enough for you, there are also four different layouts for this catamaran to choose from for the best experience. No matter what layout you and your partner choose, you’re sure to feel comfortable and connected. Overall, this catamaran is a great choice if you’re hoping for a spacious, comfortable, relaxing, and flexible cruise.

This luxury vessel will come in at just over $1 million brand new.

Antares 44 GT

When you go to the Antares Catamarans website, you’re presented with their latest model, which is currently the Antares 44 GT. After spending a year creating this model, they completely redesigned everything. This includes new details in the cockpit, more space, larger windows, comfortable seating, and much more, all without conflict with the helm position.

If you’re familiar with Antares, then you’ll also notice that they’ve added some new interior features. There are two new forward-facing hatches located in the salon that help to increase the amount of fresh air you get, allowing for proper ventilation. As for headroom, that has increased by 6.5 in (16.51 cm), now allowing 6.75 ft (2.06 m) of headroom. So if either of you is tall, you won’t have to worry about banging your head.

They’ve also accommodated for a much more comfortable experience, including for both physical and mental comfort. There are new stainless steel armrests in the cockpit for a more aesthetically pleasing design. Plus, there’s a standup locker in the cockpit that you can use for storage, but can also be used as a fridge or ice maker. Talk about flexibility!

Overall, the Antares 44 GT will give you an experience that allows you to feel the maximum amount of comfort with your partner. It would not be surprising if you decide to choose this one, because it truly seems like the best on the list so far.

Used models can be found for just under $1 million .

If you’re hoping for a great amount of space, look no further than the Leopard 42. You can choose between three or four cabins and showers, making this one of the most flexible boats on this list. This design will exceed all of your expectations and then some while still accomplishing the main goal of comfort and perfect performance.

The exterior is stunning, featuring hull side windows, a hardtop, and an upper-lounge area, which happens to be Leopard Catamarans’ signature. However, the exterior is nothing compared to the beautiful interior experience. There are modern contrasts, perfect lighting, classy finishes, and more, giving you the combined feeling of luxury and elegance.

As previously stated, you can get this model with three or four cabins. While three cabins is probably best, four cabins can also provide more storage and space for you and your partner. Every single cabin has its own private en-suite and shower area, which are features that aren’t commonly included in catamarans of this size.

The saloon has tons of skylight and an additional window in the aft starboard corner that faces the helm seat. All in all, this catamaran is a fantastic choice for any couple regardless of what they’re looking for, considering how flexible it can be.

Some used models have been as low as $250,000 .

Yet another flexible boat from the same brand, we’re going to look at the Leopard 45 now, awarded Boat of the Year in 2017. Both the exterior and interior will leave you feeling absolutely stunned , you won’t know where to start or what to start doing. The possibilities are endless with this catamaran.

Of course, there’s a hardtop lounge for maximum comfort, which includes a sunbed, seating area, and table. To get up to this lounge, you’ll head up on floating stairs that lead up from the aft cockpit without disrupting the helm station.

This catamaran is also flexible, considering it’s available in a three-cabin layout or a four-cabin layout. It’s sleek and nimble, but overall it’s going to provide a comfortable and relaxing experience. This might just be your dream boat.

When loaded with extras, this catamaran will cost you almost $600,000 .

Designed to replace the Leopard 48 (which isn’t on this list), the Leopard 50 is one of the most beautiful catamarans you’ll ever see. It has a stunning layout with a flybridge that has a lounge area, sunbed, table, and optional exterior speakers and shade awning. If that doesn’t do it for you, then I don’t know what will.

While the interior is built solely for comfort, the exterior is built to look as elegant and luxurious as possible. You can start by sunbathing on the flybridge with your lover and then relax in your cabin, or you can head over to the saloon and enjoy some fine wine as the ocean breeze waves over the both of you. Then, you can go back to the sunbathing area as you and your partner relax together. Be sure to put on some sunscreen first!

Overall, this catamaran offers a fantastic experience for both you and your partner, regardless of what you’re looking for. From a luxurious exterior to a soft interior with the most relaxing experience, this might be the best choice for the both of you.

This newer model will go for around $1 million brand new.

Buyer’s Guide

Catamarans have a high price tag when brand new, and though it may seem a lot, it is important to remember that they are highly sought-after vessels and typically have excellent resale values. Though you may not get exactly what you paid, chances are you’ll get close.

When thinking about getting a catamaran as a couple, you’ll want to consider how you intend to use it. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Will it just be the two of you? Though a four-cabin catamaran will be more spacious, if it will just be the two of you, is all that space really needed?
  • What extra amenities are needed? If you’re not planning on being on the vessel full-time, do you need a top-of-the-line kitchen?
  • Are you planning on taking longer trips? Some catamarans are not designed for long trips on open waters. Expect to pay more for such models.

If you want to better understand what to look for and how to get the best deal on a catamaran i would suggest checking out my Buyer’s Guide .

Final Thoughts

When it comes to spending time with your other half, you want to be together while creating a sense of personal space as well. If you decide to go cruising, you’ll want the perfect catamaran that’ll do just that. Be sure to look for something within your budget that has a good amount of space and comfort, as well as well-designed cabins and bathrooms and various fun activities.

If you can find one with all of these features, then you and your partner are sure to have a nice and relaxing experience. Have fun!

2023 Boat Buyers Guide: Catamarans

  • By Karl Anderson
  • December 27, 2022

Catamaran spinning circles

The popularity of the multihull (aka catamaran or cat) fishing boats has never been greater, as more and more boatbuilders enter this growing segment of the market. The inherent stability of the catamaran design rolls less with the seas, making fishing offshore less tiresome and more comfortable. Available from 20 to 48 feet, catamarans typically offer a large fishing platform with generous storage and fishing amenities. They are available in a wide variety of deck layouts, including center-consoles, dual-consoles, and even pilothouse and express variants.

Catamaran foredeck

Big Picture

The large deck area of a catamaran enables many large underdeck storage lockers and insulated fish boxes in the sponsons. This gives anglers ample room for gear and the day’s catch. The catamaran’s stability, fishability, and smooth ride in rough seas make it attractive to anglers as well as day-cruisers. A center-console version adds 360 degrees of angler access to the rail. With the dual-console design, generous seating behind a beam-to-beam windshield makes for a great family fishing-friendly setup.

Live bait is one of the most popular types of fishing in virtually every coastal zone. To do it successfully requires optimal water capacity and proper flow. The minimum size of the outflow water plumbing should be twice the size of the inflow. The plumbing should have a drain at the bottom to shed scales at the end of the day, as well as a drain at the top of the well to adjust capacity and allow overflow. Above-deck transom-mounted wells should fully flood to the lids when running to keep baits from getting beat up.

Tip: A sump box with multiple pumps in case a pump fails is the best setup for first-rate livewells. Conveniently located inflow and outflow valves make it easy to optimize the flow without tiring your bait from swimming too much in the well.

Catamaran helm

Rod Storage

Having enough rod holders is essential to be successful for opportunity fishing. Look for vertical rod storage along the console and across the back of the T-top. Many models also have rod holders along the outboard transom wall. Having plenty of gunwale rod holders for drift- and kite-fishing is helpful.

Tip: Placing adjustable swivel rod holders by Gemlux makes deep-dropping, lure-fishing and drifting even easier because they allow your rods to face the direction the baits are fishing, yet they can be swiveled back to keep rods from sticking out of the boat while running and docking.

Manufacturers often offer multiple choices for horsepower, but whatever the choice, the engines must come in pairs. For example, you might order twin outboards (one for each sponson) or four outboards (two for each sponson), but single- or triple-outboard configurations are not common on a cat. Optimal selection should be made based on user load, weight of the boat, ride comfort , performance desires, and best case for resale. It’s a rare day when you can run wide open, but having more horsepower gives better torque at slower speeds and thus better control. Running larger engines slower gives better fuel efficiency too.

Tip: When possible, choose the highest horsepower offered because it typically leads to a better resale value with a shorter sales cycle.

Power steering from engine manufacturer Optimus or SeaStar is essential with the higher horsepower required for larger boats, and it makes installing and operating the upper station in a tower far more practical and comfortable.

With the power demands of electronics, livewell pumps, stereo amps and more, it is wise to have at least two house batteries, and for larger boats, a third or fourth with a multibank charger for dockside. Each engine should have its own dedicated battery as well.

Electronics

Typically choosing the largest screen or multiple screens that will fit on the console is best-case scenario for ease of use, ergonomics, and visibility. VHF radios, stereo controller, and equipment switches for lighting, pumps, and accessories should all be integrated with greatest visibility and ease of operator reach.

A Tale of Two Hulls

A catamaran rides on pair of hulls, or sponsons, each thinner and sharper than  that of a similarly sized monohull boat. The narrow sponsons of the cat tend to slice easily through water to deliver a smooth ride, even in rough seas. At the same time, with the sponsons positioned out to the sides of the boat, cats tend to roll less, thus providing great stability to enhance crew comfort, security and safety. However, cats tend to corner more flatly than a monohull, and some hulls (but not all) tend to lean outward versus inward during a turn.

Catamaran running

Experts Say

Newer designs such as Invincible’s Morelli and Melvin-designed semi-asymmetrical sponsons eliminate some of the negatives of the cat design, such as “sneezing,” where water sprays out the front of the boat when hitting a wave. They’ve also controlled the uncomfortable “outboard lean” sensation common in older designs when in a turn. Once transitioned to a catamaran, many become true believers and preach the benefits of the design.

Editor Says: Saltwater fishing cats not only offer superb stability and smooth ride, but some also display exceptional speed and range. I recall one trip out of Key West, Florida, aboard an Invincible 40 Cat with four 350 hp outboards to the Dry Tortugas. It was a 60-mile run, and we made it there in 70 minutes. We caught more fish than our arms could bear, and then dashed back to Key West, arriving in time for cocktail hour on the same day. -Jim Hendricks, Staff Editor, Boating and Fishing Group
