Boating Courses, Education & Training

boating safety course

One way to expand your knowledge base is to check out our many articles and resources right here, at Discover Boating. But still, nothing beats actual experience on the water. The solution? A hands-on training course, and many are available throughout the nation.

Boating safety courses and hands-on training classes are offered by:

  • BoatUS Foundation

The National Safe Boating Council

The u.s. coast guard auxiliary, united states power squadron, boatus education programs.

BoatUS offers a number of different educational programs through its affiliate, the BoatUS Foundation . These include free boating safety courses given online, as well as more advanced online courses which do cost a fee ($8.50 to $40 depending on the topic and the course’s depth), but cover advanced topics like how to use AIS or GPS, propane systems on boats, and hurricane preparation.

In-class training courses are on a limited state-by-state basis, and sometimes with a nominal fee. The very best educational option, however, is probably on-the-water hands-on training classes. Again, these are limited to specific locations. Several are offered at boat shows (and your ticket to the show is often included in the package) so you can check out new boats and learn better boat handling on the very same day. Pricing ranges widely depending on the course you choose and its length, but options include topics like Introduction to Boating, Precision Docking and Boat Handling, and woman-only Women Making Waves courses.

Check Out Our Boating Safety Basics Videos

The National Safe Boating Council , a group made up of over 500 U.S. and international organizations with an interest in boating safety and education, offers a range of different training courses for boaters with skill levels ranging from novice to experienced. Their depth also ranges widely, from online offerings to multiple-day on-the-water courses. Some are advanced enough to qualify for Instructor Certification, and are verified by third-party assessment to conform with American National Standards for on-water skill training. The National Safe Boating Council also supports the “Skipper Club,” in partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard, for teaching teens age 13 through 19 on-water powerboating skills and maneuvers, terminology, and equipment.

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary offers one of the most widely available and topically wide-ranging selections of training courses out there. Their National Public Education Calendar Database lists out subject matter including topics like boating skills and seamanship, boating safety, sailing skills, GPS use, and more, which you can then search for availability by zip code. These range from one-hour classes targeting four- to nine-year-olds, to advanced eight-hour courses that will benefit even old salts.

The U.S. Power Squadron , a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to boating safety and education, offers a number of educational courses through its America’s Boating Club arm. These are interactive online sessions, covering topics like marine radios and GPS, weather, and more. Note that many of these are provided through the BoatU.S. Foundation and are identical in nature, though they also offer webinars that bring students and instructors together via a “virtual classroom.”

National boat clubs like Carefree Boat Club, Freedom Boat Club , Your Boat Club , and SailTime , as well as smaller regional boat clubs offer hands-on, on-the-water training. In fact, prior to taking out one of the club boats the training is usually mandatory for new members. Many clubs also offer yearly refreshers, special education sessions, and other opportunities to advance your boating education on a regular basis. Best of all, in most cases this training is included in your membership with no extra charge.

Get a Boating License

Finding out how to get a boating license is a great first step towards getting out on the water as a responsible boater.

Find the Right Boat

The first step in the boat-buying process is also the most important—determining what type of boat is right for you.

Additional Boating Education Resources

There are also many youth programs designed specifically to help kids and young boaters learn the ropes. And on top of all that, numerous private organizations offer real-world boating education. As you decide how to best advance your own boating skills, also consider:

  • Safely Moored offers professional hands-on boating instruction and safety training, as well as yacht management, dockside services, and yacht sales in South Florida.
  • The Recreational Powerboating Association (RPBA) has hands-on powerboat instruction, powerboat certification and powerboat schools.
  • The American Sailing Association (ASA) is the oldest and largest keelboat certification authority in the United States, with 300 affiliated sailing schools worldwide.
  • The United States Sailing Association (US Sailing) , the national governing body for sailing, provides leadership, integrity, and growth for the sport in the United States through wide-ranging educational programs.
  • US Powerboating offers courses for powerboat operators and is an affiliate of US Sailing.

Deckhand Training Courses

Entry-level deckhand courses and qualifications to help land your first job on a superyacht.

Essential Deckhand Training:

Entry-level deckhand courses and qualifications are essential to your success in the superyacht industry. Obtaining your first job as a deckhand is difficult as it is a fiercely competitive position. With a great deal of training available, it may be difficult to understand which deckhand courses are right for you and your budget. Before deciding on which courses to enrol in, we encourage you to understand the role of these courses and certifications so that you are able to make informed decisions.

Below is a list of essential courses you should take as an aspiring deckhand with little or no experience :

  • STCW Basic Training
  • RYA Power Boat Level 2 or IYT Rib Master
  • Proficiency in Security Awareness PSA or Designated Security Duties (PDSD)

You are able to connect with our global network of deckhand training providers for each course, either by selecting a specific course, or by selecting a region in the deckhand course finder section, found below the course content.

STCW Basic Safety Training

In order for you to legally obtain a job on a commercial superyacht (over 24m) you have to be certified with all four basic safety training modules, which are as follows:

  • Personal Survival Techniques | PST (A-VI/1-1)
  • Fire Fighting Fire Prevention | FFP (A-VI/1-2)
  • Elementary First Aid | EFA (A-VI/1-3)
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities | PSSR (A-VI/1-4)

STCW Basic Training courses can be booked on an individual bases or booked in combination with other essential deckhand courses. You can find out more about STCW Basic Training , connect with an STCW Basic Training Centre near you , or continue to other deckhand safety training courses below.

*Although this is a commercial requirement, it is generally seen as a requirement for employment onboard private vessels by yacht owners, captains, management companies or flag states. Failure to obtain STCW Basic training severely limits employment opportunities.

Powerboat / Rib Training:

As an aspiring deckhand, this course is a necessity, providing you with an essential license to drive superyacht tenders around the world. Unless you have a role that excludes you from such deckhand activities, this is a crucial course that forms the basis upon which you can develop your vessel handling skills. These skills are not only required to drive guests, but also to pass practical examinations required for licenses required to drive larger vessels.

The two most popular courses that do not require any prior experience, are the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course or the IYT Small Powerboat & Rib Master . Although the majority of deckhand job posts request a Powerboat Level II, an IYT Small Powerboat & Rib Master is seen as an equivalent and serves the same purpose. Both are recognised by the MCA.

Savvy Maritime Tender For Training

Proficiency in Security Certificate

(STCW A-VI/6-1) & (STCW A-VI/6-1)

Proficiency in Designated Security Awareness (PSA)  is the minimum requirement, whereas  Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD)  is required for crew who are designated security duties on such vessels.

Both courses can be done in class or online. *ISPS complaint yachts are commercial yachts larger than 500GT (Usually commercial yachts +50m in length)*

Find out more about the PSA & PDSD Certification and connect with a training provider, or continue reading about further deckhand training below.

Most "Superyacht Deckhand Courses" are non-accredited and do not form part of a requirement for legal employment but are generally sold in conjunction with essential courses (some of which may be mandatory or deemed as appropriate by the training provider in question) and advertised as a "superyacht deckhand course" package or similar.

The purpose of a superyacht deckhand course to introduce candidates to the duties and skills associated with the role of a deckhand. This course is tailored towards candidates with little to no exposure to the superyacht industry.

Course content is dependant on the training provider but generally includes industry information, general deck procedures, wash-downs, maintenance, cleaning procedures, line handling, knots and bends, as well other topics to help familiarize you with the deck department career path the lies ahead.

Superyacht deckhand courses give potential employers an indication that yous have a basic skill set and understanding of the deckhand duties that lie ahead.  This forms a foundation upon which to build skills and knowledge through onboard training and experience. Depending on the location and school in question, a small amount of onboard training/experience on a yacht nearby may be included.

VHF Short Range Certificate (SRC):

As a deckhand seeking your first job in the yachting industry, it is advisable to obtain a VHF Short Range Certificate, preferably one recognised by the MCA. VHF is a common form of communication not only from the bridge of the superyacht but also from tenders to the main vessel (or other vessels) when out of UHF Radio range (your personal hand held for internal crew communication), or to land based authorities.

This 1-day course is an essential qualification required for further deck qualifications (Such as a Yachtmaster/ Master of Yachts), and is also required for commercial endorsement of a small powerboat license. The sooner you as a deckhand becomes familiar with this equipment the better. It is, therefore, a recommended course for green deckhands to complete.

Personal Watercraft (PWC) License

PWC's often referred to as Jet Ski's or Wave Runners, are common watercraft found on board superyachts. Operation of PWC's is a common duty of a deckhands during guest trips. Certain countries require PWC operators to hold a license, most commonly countries in Europe/ The Mediterranean, making it mandatory for crew to hold a license should they wish to operate one.

This one-day theory and practical course will teach you how to operate and navigate a personal watercraft in a safe manner. No previous experience or qualifications are required. A certificate is provided upon successful completion of the course (to the required standard). The IYT PWC and RYA PWC are recommended, accredited versions of this course.

In areas where jet ski licenses are not required, it is a commonly requested by captains, management companies and owners for insurance purposes. It is very beneficial to hold such a license.

Complementary Deckhand Training

Additional courses to give you an edge (that do not require previous deckhand experience)

  • RYA Personal Watercraft (PWC) Instructor
  • SCUBA Diving Qualifications

Jet ski instructor riding a personal water craft

RYA Personal Watercraft (Jet Ski) Instructor Course

Due to the fact that charter guests and yacht crew require a PWC license in order to operate a Jet Ski in the Med, the demand for crew with the PWC instructor certification is high. Crew with the instructor license (working on a correctly registered vessel) are able to certify guests with an RYA Introduction to PWC Safety Course, allowing them to use the watercraft during their time on board.

Scuba Diving:

Scuba diving experience and qualifications are beneficial in helping land a job as a deckhand. While Dive Instructor and Dive Master courses considerably improve the chances of getting a job on vessels that support guest diving experiences, basic Open Water and Advanced diving qualifications are also beneficial and will improve your CV.

Whether it is accompanying guests on a dive in the Bahamas or inspecting something under the hull of the yacht, scuba diving experience can be a great addition to your skill set as a deckhand.

Deckhand Training & Certificates For Deckhands With Sea Time & Experience

Courses & certification for deckhands that have evidence of sea service and real tender handling experience after 1 to a few busy seasons of employment

  • MCA Yacht Rating Certificate
  • Yacht-Master / Master of Yachts
  • Advanced Powerboat
  • MCA Efficient Deckhand (EDH)

MCA Yacht Rating Certificate

Certain commercial superyachts require a number of crew to hold a Yacht Rating certificate as per the safe manning procedures of the vessel in question. An individual can apply for an MCA Yacht Rating certificate once the required sea time is acquired and by completing specific tasks in the Training Record Book (TRB), signed off by a qualified officer or captain.

For Crew without experience, the yacht service requirement can be reduced if aYacht Rating Course Completion Certificate  or - IYT Superyacht Deck Crew Course is attained but the MCA Yacht Rating Certificate can only be applied for once 2 months of sea service is acquired.

Therefore, although a "Yacht Rating Course" covers some important aspects, usually taught onboard, completion of this course does not qualify a candidate to apply for a job that requires an MCA Yacht Rating Certificate , unless the applicant has sufficient sea service and meets the medical and STCW requirement.

RYA Advanced Powerboat

If you are required to be licensed to drive larger powerboats (10m - 24m) during the day and night and have insufficient sea time and experience for your Master of Yachts 200, then the Advanced Power boat course is an option to consider. With an RYA/MCA Advanced Powerboat Commercial Endorsement, license holders are able to drive an MCA coded boat up to 24m in length or 80 gross tons up to 20 miles away from the shore or safe haven. The responsibility of large tender handling is usually only given to crew have built up significant time behind the helm of tenders, under supervision of more experienced crew. If you are new to the industry (unless you have real large power boating experience) you are likely to be accompanied and supervised by a more experienced, licensed crew member during large tender handling duties. It should therefore not be assumed that this course will allow you to take on such duties without time, experience  and training with a more experienced crew member present.

Deckhand Next to Yacht Tender

Yachtmaster / Master of Yachts 200:

Gaining a Master of Yachts Certification is an important step for those who would like to progress their career as a deckhand and start taking on additional responsibilities. A Commercially Endorsed Master of Yachts 200GT opens up more employment opportunities (fulfils certain manning requirements for commercial vessels), allows candidates to work as an Officer on yachts <500GT and allows candidates to begin training modules that form part of the requirement for an MCA Officer of The Watch (OOW) 3000  and is a common requirement for the primary drivers of guests in large superyacht tenders. Find out more about the RYA and IYT Yachtmaster / Master of Yachts.

Efficient Deckhand (EDH) Course

Once you have your Yachtmaster / Master of Yachts under your belt and you are ready to start chipping away at your OOW (MCA Officer of the Watch 3000 Limited), it is advised to begin with the Efficient Deckhand Course. An EDH will ensure that you operate in a safe and professional manner when moving to a more senior role where leadership and instruction is required. The framework for further training can be found on our Deckhand to OOW course page .

IYT has developed a modular format in maritime training to offer a series of recreational nautical courses that are accepted by major national registries and governments. We refer to this series of courses as the "International Boating & Sailing Passport." This has enabled us to successfully establish a network of partner schools offering IYT courses worldwide and has been enthusiastically embraced by a growing number of schools, countries and administrations. Candidates have the convenience of full-time, evening or weekend participation coupled with the ability to choose a convenient location.

Our certificates are accepted by major yacht charter companies and many insurance companies offer discounted premiums to those who hold IYT qualifications. It is important to understand that an IYT certificate is a qualification that can be used globally. Unlike other training organisations, IYT insists on an understanding of IALA regulations in areas A & B, weather systems and tidal calculations in the north & southern hemispheres.

How Captains And Harbor Pilots Safely Guide Ships Into Port

An aerial view of a large cargo ship stacked with shipping containers after running into a bridge. The bridge is collapsed into the water.

Details are still emerging about the disaster that happened in the early morning of March 26, 2024, when the Dali, a large cargo ship on its way out of the port of Baltimore,  hit a major bridge and caused it to collapse .

The Conversation’s senior politics and democracy editor, Naomi Schalit, spoke with Captain Allan Post, a veteran ship’s officer, about the role a ship pilot plays in bringing a large ship in and out of a harbor.  Post, who now directs  Marine Education Support and Safety Operations at Texas A&M University at Galveston and is also deputy superintendent of the Texas A&M Maritime Academy, said the disaster was “absolutely” every crew member’s nightmare.

What was your first thought when you heard about the accident?

Post: My first thought was, thank God it happened at night, because of the low amount of traffic on the bridge. If that had happened during the daytime, casualties would be in the thousands. My heart aches for those lives lost.

There were two ship pilots aboard the ship as it left its berth in the Port of Baltimore. Can you tell us what ship pilots do?

Post: Ship pilots are brought on board in what are considered restricted maneuverability or navigation areas. They are local experts who are usually certified by the state or federal government  to provide advice to the master of the vessel as to how to control the vessel , safely and adequately, through the pilotage waters, which in this case would be down the river from the Port of Baltimore.

Pilots are well practiced in close-quarters maneuvering, especially with tugboats and docking the vessel alongside the assigned berth.

But a pilot doesn’t come aboard the ship and take control of it, do they?

Post: They are just  advisers to the captain , who is known as the “master.” The master still has full responsibility for the safe navigation of the vessel. So the pilot will meet the ship out at sea or at the dock if it’s in port and leaving to go to sea. They proceed up to the bridge. Usually they exchange greetings, and usually a little bit of ship’s swag is given, either a hat or something else, or at least a cup of coffee.

They then set up their gear. With the electronics that we now have, they plug into the ship’s electronic chart data information system. And then they conduct the pilot exchange with the master of the vessel, where the master of the vessel describes where they are going, what the characteristics of the ship are, who’s on the bridge, what their first language is and the air draft of the vessel, which refers to how high out of the water the vessel is, so that you know whether you can take the ship under a bridge safely.

Once that’s completed, the pilot then starts instructing the officer of the watch or the captain – those are usually the same person – in how to get to where they need to be to dock the ship, or undock the ship and bring it to sea. This instructing is done during complex maneuvers, not all the time. The pilot can also say he’s not going to do it, and can shut down their operations if conditions are unsafe or if they feel that the vessel is not in condition to be able to transit safely. That happens a lot, especially in fog.

The ship pilot also interacts with the Coast Guard Vessel Traffic Service and other ships in the area, and coordinates with the tugboats and line handlers to be able to safely maneuver the vessel close to the pier or when a ship is leaving the berth.

Can you describe the training of a ship pilot?

Post: Most of them start out at a maritime academy and have to spend many years at sea in command or as a bridge watch-stander on a vessel. From there, they start into the pilot apprentice program that each one of the pilot associations has, and those programs last years. What they do in those programs is use simulators and real, actual hands-on training, so that they can see how the different ships maneuver, how different places along the route have different currents and tides, and how the channels affect the ships.

It’s not something that you can go to a sea school for three weeks to learn and then come out and be a pilot.  It’s many years long . They’re really the surgeons of the sea.

So when a ship’s pilot shows up, they’re going to be someone with a minimum of how many years training before they even get onto your ship?

Post: Many have 10-plus years before they are allowed to work on their own.

They have to be specialists in the place where they work, don’t they?

Post: Most of them are ship’s officers licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard, and they’re licensed for unlimited tonnage vessels. But that’s not the end of training. From there, they are hired into the pilot apprentice programs for the area in which they’re going to gain their pilot endorsement or credentials. One pilot may not be credentialed in another area. They spend many years under the guidance of senior pilots who teach them basically everything that they need to know about the local waterways, about the navigation, current tides, where all the berths are. They become absolute experts in how to do this. And then, when most of them end up taking the pilotage exam, they have to draw the charts that they would be using in the pilotage waters – from memory.

Are there legal requirements for ship pilots to be present both going out of and coming in these restricted areas?

Post: Yes, there are – state law, federal law or both.

This is an almost 1,000-foot-long vessel. Is that big, small or medium?

Post: That’s about standard size these days. Ship sizes have absolutely grown monstrous over the years. But 1,000 feet is just about normal.

Has ship piloting been around for a long time?

Post: It’s been around for almost as long as man has been using the sea for commerce. In the early years of sea travel, and even now, a captain is not going to know every port, so he would bring on a person with local knowledge. It started out a lot of times as local fishermen. In the U.S., the  Sandy Hook Pilots Association  has been piloting ships  in and out of New York Harbor for about 300 years .

Was what happened in Baltimore every captain, pilot and crew’s nightmare?

Post: Absolutely. My initial assumption is that I think it’s going to come down to an electrical fault on the ship that was just terrible timing.

Baltimore bridge collapse wasn't first major accident for giant container ship Dali

Propulsion failed on the cargo ship that struck the Francis Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday as it was leaving port, causing it to collapse into the frigid Patapsco River. Its crew warned Maryland officials of a possible collision because they had lost control.

“The vessel notified MD Department of Transportation (MDOT) that they had lost control of the vessel” and a collision with the bridge “was possible,” according to an unclassified Department of Homeland Security report. “The vessel struck the bridge causing a complete collapse.”

An official speaking on condition of anonymity confirmed to USA TODAY that the DHS’ Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency is working with federal, state, and local officials “to understand the potential impacts of this morning’s collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.”

Clay Diamond, executive director, American Pilots’ Association, told USA TODAY power issues are not unusual on cargo ships, which are so large they cannot easily course correct.

“It’s likely that virtually every pilot in the country has experienced a power loss of some kind (but) it generally is momentary,” Diamond said. “This was a complete blackout of all the power on the ship, so that’s unusual. Of course this happened at the worst possible location.”

The ship in Tuesday's crash, Dali, was involved in at least one prior accident when it collided with a shipping pier in Belgium.

That 2016 incident occurred as the Dali was leaving port in Antwerp and struck a loading pier made of stone, causing damage to the ship’s stern, according to VesselFinder.com, a site that tracks ships across the world. An investigation determined a mistake made by the ship’s master and pilot was to blame.

No one was injured in that crash, although the ship required repair and a full inspection before being returned to service. The pier – or berth – was also seriously damaged and had to be closed.

VesselFinder reports that the Dali was chartered by Maersk, the same company chartering it during the Baltimore harbor incident.

The 9-year-old container ship had passed previous inspections during its time at sea, but during one such inspection in June at the Port of San Antonio in Chile, officials discovered a deficiency with its "propulsion and auxiliary machinery (gauges, thermometers, etc)," according to the Tokyo MOU, an intergovernmental maritime authority in the Asia-Pacific region.

The report provided no other information about the deficiency except to note that it was not serious enough to remove the ship from service.

Why did Dali crash into the Baltimore bridge?

Officials said Tuesday they’re investigating the collision, including whether systems on board lost electricity early Tuesday morning, which could be related to mechanical failure, according to a U.S. official who was not authorized to speak publicly.

Accidents at sea, known as marine casualties, are not uncommon, the source told USA TODAY. However, “allisions,” in which a moving object strikes a stationary one with catastrophic results, are far less common. The investigation of the power loss aboard the Dali, a Singapore-flagged vessel, will be a high priority.

In a video posted to social media, lights on the Dali shut off, then turned back on, then shut off again before the ship struck a support pier on the bridge.

Numerous cargo and cruise ships have lost power over the years.

The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea requires all international vessels to have two independent sources of electricity, both of which should be able to maintain the ship's seaworthiness on their own, according to a safety study about power failures on ships , citing the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea.

The Dali's emergency generator was likely responsible for the lights coming back on after the initial blackout, Diamond said.

“There was still some steerage left when they initially lost power,” he said. “We’ve been told the ship never recovered propulsion. The emergency generator is a diesel itself – so if you light off the generator, that’s also going to put off a puff of exhaust.”

Under maritime law, all foreign flagged vessels must be piloted into state ports by a state licensed pilot so the Dali's pilot is licensed by Association of Maryland Pilots .

Diamond described the incident based on information from the Maryland agency that licensed the pilot aboard the ship. His organization represents that group and all other state piloting agencies in the US.

“The pilot was directing navigation of the ship as it happened,” he said. “He asked the captain to get the engines back online. They weren’t able to do that, so the pilot took all the action he could. He tried to steer, to keep the ship in the channel. He also dropped the ship’s anchor to slow the ship and guide the direction.

“Neither one was enough. The ship never did regain its engine power.”

How big is the Dali ship?

The Dali is a 984-foot container vessel built in 2015 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea. With a cruising speed of about 22 knots – roughly 25 mph. It has traveled the world carrying goods from port to port.

The ship, constructed of high-strength steel, has one engine and one propeller, according to MarineTraffic.com.

The Dali arrived in Baltimore on Sunday from the Port of Norfolk in Virginia. Before that, it had been in New York and came through the Panama Canal.

It remains at the scene of the collapse as authorities investigate.

Who owns and operates the Dali?

It is owned by the Singapore-based Grace Ocean Pte Ltd but managed by Synergy Marine Group, also based in Singapore. It was carrying Maersk customers’ cargo, according to a statement from the shipping company.

“We are deeply concerned by this incident and are closely monitoring the situation,” Maersk said in the statement.

Synergy, which describes itself as a leading ship manager with more than 600 vessels under its guidance, issued a statement on its website acknowledging the incident and reporting no injuries among its crew and no pollution in the water. There were two pilots on board and 22 crew members in all, according to Synergy, all of them from India.

USA TODAY reached out to Synergy on Tuesday, but the company did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Thank you for your feedback and invite you to have lunch or dinner again aboard the ship in an atmosphere of high standards of yacht hospitality.

everything was perfect - the food, the service, the desserts were the best, nice atmosphere and the location - magical

Best food, best view in Moscow. absolutely faultless from arrival to finish. Best risotto i had for many years absolutely perfectly cooked. The view on Ukrainian hotel and the white house by night is amazing

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Food is very expensive, very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Customer service is a huge problem in Moscow but Chaika sets... a great example for others in the industry! Food is delicious and the menu has lots of options for everyone! Atmosphere is great and view is beautiful on the embankment. Special thanks to German & Oleg! More

Thank you for your feedback! Again aboard the yacht restaurant "Chaika" in accordance with the high standards of yacht hospitality.

Highly recommended, great location in the city center of Moscow with a superb atmosphere. Too many menu choices, though all delicious!

Thx a lot for your review! We are looking forward to see you in our restaurants.

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More

Good afternoon! Thank you for your detailed feedback! We are looking forward to seeing you again, we are sure that you will be delighted with our dishes!

I've been here several times during two business trip in Moscow. The overall quality for both service and food is absolutely top-notch, plus the location is very unique.

Marines back in Australia during six months of training across South Pacific

U.S. Marines have returned to northern Australia to train as an air-ground task force for six months across the continent and in the Philippines and Indonesia, a Marine Corps spokesman said Thursday.

This year’s 2,000-strong Marine Rotational Force-Darwin is the 13th contingent to arrive in the Northern Territory since 2012, according to a Marine Corps statement that day.

“The Marines and Sailors of Marine Rotational Force-Darwin are honored and excited to continue the legacy of cooperation,” force commander Col. Brian Mulvihill said in the statement. “Our strong Alliance contributes to stability in the region and enables the readiness of our forces to respond to any crisis or contingency that arises.”

Led by an infantry regiment from Camp Pendleton, Calif., for the third year in a row, the Marines are scheduled to train until October with Australian troops and counterparts throughout the region.

The force will be supported by Combat Logistics Battalion 5, 1st Marine Logistics Group with a command element from 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Lt. Colton Martin, a spokesman for the rotational force said by email Thursday.

The ground combat element for the force is comprised of 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, with artillery from 1st Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, and engineers from 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, he said.

They’ll be supported by Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 268 out of Hawaii flying MV-22 B Osprey aircraft, he said.

Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force Ospreys began flying again this month after being grounded following the Nov. 29 crash of an Air Force Osprey off the coast of Japan that killed eight airmen.

An Osprey crash in Australia in August killed three Marines attached to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 363 during last year’s rotation to the Northern Territory.

Marines of the Darwin rotation will participate in the annual Balikatan drills in the Philippines, Martin said.

Balikatan will include 11,000 U.S. and 5,000 Filipino troops training from April 22 to May 8, the state-run Philippine News Service reported March 20.

The Darwin Marines will join Marine Aviation Support Activity, another drill in the Philippines that will follow Balikatan, Martin said.

Later, the rotational Marines will participate in Super Garuda Shield in Indonesia, he said. The exercise in September involves 5,000 troops from seven nations.

“These rotations … serve to increase regional cooperation with partner nations in the Indo-Pacific,” Australian navy Capt. Mitchell Livingstone, who leads the Darwin-based Headquarters Northern Command, said in the Marines’ statement.

In Australia, the Marines will join numerous training events, including Southern Jackaroo, which typically involves Japanese troops; Bhakti Kanyini AUSINDO, which involved Indonesian forces last year; and the aviation-focused Pitch Black, Diamond Storm and HELICON LUK, Martin said.

The rotational force will train across a full spectrum of missions, including expeditionary operations, geographically distributed communications, non-combatant evacuation operations, embassy reinforcements, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, and rapid projection of combat power, according to the Marines’ statement.

Grunion sports, grunion sports | on the water: alamitos bay yacht club hosts midwinters west regatta.

yacht courses

The Alamitos Bay Yacht Club hosted the 2024 ILCA, 29er & I420 Midwinters West Regatta over the weekend, with more than 200 entries participating — making it the biggest regatta in Long Beach in three decades.

As a part of the trophy presentation on Sunday, regatta co-chair Ed Spotskey commended the yacht club’s staff.

“The staff is always just taken for granted: they ran a clinic, had one day off and then started five days of the biggest regatta in 30 years,” Spotskey said. “It was an absolute honor to bring them in front of all those people and I actually left the podium and stood out front and talked about them as being the backbone of this property. With endless 12-hour days, silently behind the scenes.”

Besides recognizing ABYC’s staff contribution to the regatta’s success, volunteers Judy Mathias and Mary Riddick – both more than 90 year old – were lauded for their commitment and dedication to ABYC.

The club was buzzing with young people from all over the world, many getting their first taste of being in Long Beach as they gear up for the 2028 Olympics.

All four days of the regatta, I kept thinking about what kind of first impression the city made on those young people.

It did seem, after all, as if the weekend highlighted the quintessential Long Beach experience.

I looked at Marine Stadium and there were university students competing in the Gruenberg Cup (more on that later). As I drove by the sailing center on Sunday morning, folks were getting ready for the 12th Annual Adler paddle out.

Saturday night brought Landslide, a Fleetwood Mac tribute band to the Long Beach Arena, where they performed “Tusk” with Poly’s marching band.

It was special to see so many of the people that had volunteered at the regatta over the weekend.

I’ve often thought that we live in a pretty extraordinary place: Alamitos’s Bay is almost a storybook land for our children to learn how to swim and learn various water sports in a safe, happy environment with so many spectacular events.

As I watched those young sailors that dream of coming back to Long Beach for the Olympics, I was convinced we made a great first impression.

The Collegiate Rowing Regatta took place on Saturday, March 23, at Marine Stadium.

The hosts, Long Beach State, competed against San Diego State and USC the 2,000-meter races the Gruenberg Cup, with the Trojans taking top honors.

The regatta featured four races for the men’s crews. On the women’s side, the event was only a scrimmaging opportunity for the three teams.

The 12th annual Adler Paddle, which took place in Alamitos Bay on Sunday, March 24, featured 40 people competing in the race commemorating Steve Adler, who died from a genetic disorder called a thoracic aortic dissection.

Organizers reminded everyone of the importance of knowing your genetic health history, as it can save your life or a loved one’s life. All proceeds from raffle ticket and T-shirt sales went to The John Ritter Foundation.

Racing was canceled on the opening day of the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix in Christchurch because of dolphin activity on the course for the duration of the race window.

In line with SailGP protocol, racing was delayed to allow the dolphin to pass through safely. Unfortunately, it did not move outside the course area, which prevented racing from taking place.

ESPN+’s new series “Tryouts” will premiere on April 10 — and will highlight Long Beach’s lifeguards as they try to earn a spot on the elite rescue team.

Candidates must prove they have the physical and mental fortitude to endure the ocean and make quick, lifesaving decisions.

Nearly 100 applicants test their abilities in swimming and running, as well as a high-pressure interview, to prove they have what it takes to be a Long Beach Lifeguard.

Due to an editing glitch a couple of weeks ago, the USC sailing team was not properly acknowledged for taking second place in the college keel boat regatta hosted by Los Angeles Yacht Club. USC was leading the regatta going into the final day on Sunday.

The sailing team trains locally out of the US Sailing Center Long Beach and Executive Director Mike Segerblom, a USC alum and All-American SC sailor, coached the USC team at the Harbor Cup.

Most of the USC sailors had no keelboat experience; instead, they only had dinghy experience. Segerblom coached the USC team over several practice sessions within a month of the Harbor Cup on a Catalina 37, according to an email from team member Tim Smith.

The USC skipper was sophomore Morgana Manti, from Italy, and she was the only female skipper at this year’s Harbor Cup.
