History of Benetti Yachts

Benetti Yachts was founded in 1873 by Lorenzo Benetti. Operating from his base in Viareggio, Italy, the original boatyard and production facility were very much family-oriented. As business grew, the company adapted to the changing times and evolved into a key player in the luxury superyacht market.

The popularity of Benetti Yachts increased over the decades, as did the size and complexity of the vessels being produced. In 1907 the company began producing oil-powered superyachts, and in the 1950s they opened a new production facility in Fano, Italy, to meet demand. Today, Benetti Yachts remain a popular choice for luxury superyacht construction across the world.

Throughout its long history, Benetti Yachts have been known for quality construction, and today the company continues to produce high-end vessels regularly. They remain one of the most successful and renowned production boat manufacturers in the industry.

The American leg of Yachtmaster successfully closed the 21st edition of this Benetti program for captains and crews featuring workshops and team building activities.

Following the incredible response to the phygital event in February, the Yachtmaster was back in-person again at the exclusive Baker’s Cay Resort in Key Largo. Its central theme was sustainability, an increasingly important value for Benetti, which boosted its message by organizing the event in a location that prioritizes its sustainable and conservation practices with use of biodegradable materials and low environmental impact products.      

The event opened with the Benetti Conference, in which Benetti Americas Country Manager, Nick Bischoff, presented the fleet’s new models. He also spoke at length about Oasis Deck, a new solution recently adopted on the Oasis 34M and the entire B.Now family. The Oasis Deck boasts five indispensable features including  wings that open out to increase the available space close to the water but sheltered from the waves; a built-in pool; a 270-degree field of view astern and from the saloon; a system providing a mix of sunlight and shade that enables guests to enjoy the deck at all times of day; and the Social Design of the entire deck as a spacious and convivial oasis.             Following this the Benetti Americas Service Team, Andrea Cecchini (Azimut Benetti Service Manager) and Giovanni Arista (Class Service Manager) reinforced the dedication Benetti has to aftersales and the support provided to Captains and Crew locally and internationally.

 Thereafter,  the Owner’s Team Perspective, was introduced with Benjamin Tellez, the captain of the Benetti M/Y Bacchanal (a 47-metre custom steel yacht), being interviewed on stage by Dockwalk editor Lauren Beck. Tellez spoke about his experience as a megayacht captain for the same owner for 21 years and how he  maintains good relations with his owners and the yards he works with. The afternoon ended with a session dedicated to partners and a demonstration by Ian Heflin, Direct Sales Specialist at VEGA Americas, on their  advanced dry cell technology for pressure sensors.  At dinner, Raquel Raies, brand ambassador for Macallan, a major label that shares Benetti’s the values of craftsmanship and ceaseless strive for quality, took the participants through a tasting of the exclusive Macallan Rare Cask Single Malt Whisky.    

The morning of November 10 was taken up by team building activities: on dock  golf contests with biodegradable golf balls containing fish feed and team obstacle races  with Seabob. During the Owner’s Team Perspective in the afternoon, Lauren Beck interviewed captain Kelly Gordon, who spoke about her experience as a woman at the helm of a superyacht and the various challenges she has faced during her career.

The second workshop saw Nick Bischoff, Fabio Fede (Product Marketing Coordinator) and Peter Selivanoff (Senior Manager Yacht Services, Fraser Yachts) address the theme of the recent introduction of the IMO TIER standards for vessels of less than 500 gross tonnage. The new standard aims to drastically reduce NOx emissions in so-called ECAs (Emission Control Areas), which include the entire US coastline. As explained during the workshop, these standards had been adopted in advance by Benetti, which is now offering a full line of new models (Class, Oasis and B.Yond) that can be configured for IMO TIER III thanks to the use of SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction systems) and urea tanks. 

In the third workshop, on low-emissions yachts, Fabio Fede talked about how Benetti successfully managed to market a new 37 metre steel yacht with a hybrid power unit: the B.Yond 37M. The innovative hybrid system – E-Mode – developed in collaboration with Siemens Energy, together with the SCR catalytic filters, enables the B.Yond 37M to appreciably reduce both CO2 and NOx emissions, making her the first “low emission yacht” in her category. Fede also introduced another Benetti project, the 107-metre Luminosity, the largest hybrid giga yacht ever built. Powered by lithium batteries rated 3 MWh and a diesel-electric propulsion and generation system, Luminosity is one of the most technologically advanced yachts of the 21st century and can, among other things, enter protected marine areas off-limits to conventional yachts. The focus then shifted to the field in which Azimut|Benetti’s R&D department is investing so that it can build yachts with increasingly low emissions thanks to the use of alternative fuels like hydrogen and methane and alternative propulsion technologies like gas, dual-fuel and fuel cell engines.

Roger Trinterud, Sales Director Cruise and Yacht at Kongsberg Maritime, the world-leading designer and builder of integrated bridge and navigation systems for both ships and large yachts, closed the session by illustrating Kongsberg’s latest trends, innovations, and projects. One of these, in collaboration with Benetti, was to build an integrated bridge and propulsion control system for the 107-metre giga yacht Lana. 

In the evening, there was a gala dinner, themed “White with a touch of gold”, and the event was brought to a close the following morning with a yoga session on the beach. In addition to the pleasure of meeting face-to-face again after a long period of virtual interaction, the event was made even livelier by its partners: Asea Nautica, Awlgrip, Firefly, Fraser Yachts, Kongsberg, Private Insurance Services, Seabob, Slam, Vega, Videoworks and Viraver, all available to exchange views with the participants.

Benetti’s Superyacht Calex Reviewed

It’s a long way to go from California to Italy just to build a boat. Then again, Calex , delivered last year by Benetti , is a 220-foot fully custom build—60 feet larger than its owner’s previous superyacht , which was semicustom. It’s also an example of the degree to which an experienced owner will go to ensure the comfort of those accompanying him: not just family and friends, but also crew.

While a larger yacht naturally affords more indoor and outdoor space, this California resident wanted an abundance of both, prioritizing privacy and well-being.

Arguably the best example of this is the owner’s suite, which, in combination with a dedicated alfresco area, is more like a penthouse apartment. Giorgio Cassetta and his team at Cassetta Yacht Designers, which has styled numerous Benettis, penned 1,772 square feet on the upper deck for this, from amidships forward. The owner’s suite includes the master stateroom, an office, a double bath and a walk-in closet. Since the stateroom faces sole-to-ceiling glass forward, 180 degrees of changing views welcomes the owner each morning. The alfresco lounge lets the owner relax in privacy. Accessible from the suite via two curved sliding doors, the lounge has chaises, chairs and a gas fireplace. And, the raised foredeck forward can be the owner’s touch-and-go helipad.

Unwinding in the company of friends and family was also important in commissioning the yacht, whose beach club is one of the more cleverly private places aboard Calex . Beach clubs have become bigger indoor-outdoor areas, especially through the use of fold-down platforms. They enhance the feeling of having a large lounge atop the sea, but they present a problem when owners and guests want seclusion. So with Calex , a single gull-wing door fully aft swings up to yield access. The beach club is still sizable, in part thanks to the yacht’s 35-foot beam. Guests can watch sports on the TV, enjoy drinks from the bar and use the hammam. To take a dip, they can step out onto the swim platform and use the flip-down swim ladder. Boarding water toys is just as simple from the platform.

And boy, does Calex have toys—especially ones that will help guests burn calories. Stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, water skis, electric surfboards, electric foiling boards, a wakeboard and a surfboard are all available. Friends and family craving a little more speed can step aboard two personal watercraft capable of 65 mph. If the toys aren’t enough exercise, gym equipment and a yoga space are on the sun deck, with a nearby hot tub for a post-workout muscle soak.

All of the time and attention put into creating these areas would be for naught if the crew had subpar quarters. Time and time again, well-planned crew’s quarters contribute to stronger staff retention and a better yacht-ownership experience. Sixteen hands, led by Capt. Eddie Cooney, handle operations aboard Calex . While no one will blink to learn that Cooney’s cabin is on the bridge deck, near the wheelhouse and the ship’s office, they’ll definitely do a double take to see its design, along with that of the quarters for the rest of the crew belowdecks.

According to the Benetti Style Department, the owner had a singular focus for their area from the start of planning. The furnishings and decorative materials are similar to those in the two main-deck VIP staterooms and four guest staterooms (two doubles and two convertible twins) on the lower deck. Finally, and wisely, dumbwaiters connect the main-deck galley to the upper decks’ lounging spaces inside and out.

Calex also features sculptures and art pieces the owner has picked up amid his travels. The yacht casts a comforting spell, inviting guests to be as social as they wish throughout the five enclosed decks, as well as outside on the terrace-like areas and fully open sun deck. Movable deck furnishings make it easy to go from big, garrulous groups to cozier conversations. Simultaneously, Calex caters to more secluded downtime, especially for its owner. Ultimately, Calex is built for different needs, including those of the crew.

It’s a long way to go from California to Italy to get all of this. But, especially for this owner, it was worth it.  

Well(ness) Wishes

As much as the owner set aside space for health and wellness, he wanted the interior ambience of Calex to convey a sense of well-being too. Ivory-toned furnishings and warm woods, such as maple and American walnut, create a serene atmosphere, along with a dose of sophistication. The decor is by the Benetti Style Department and the owner’s team.

Engine Emissions

Calex is Benetti’s first fully custom yacht in this size range to comply with Tier III regulations. Tier III is an International Maritime Organization standard that reduces nitrous-oxide emissions by about 70 percent compared with prior regulations. Calex has a scrubbing system for exhaust gas from the main engines and gensets.

Charter Calex

Calex is part of the Northrop & Johnson charter fleet. The yacht is heading for the Caribbean this winter and the Mediterranean next year. A glass elevator and space-planning make the five enclosed decks accessible for wheelchairs. The weekly base rate starts at $680,000.

Propulsion System

Along with being at the forefront of trend-setting yacht design, Benetti is also a pioneer in creating sustainable production processes and models that are as eco-friendly as possible.

Their new hybrid propulsion system, which was conceived exclusively for the FB272 Giga yacht, employs a responsible energy approach as it drastically decreases fuel consumption over the life of the yacht. This particular propulsion package included diesel-electric engines with two Azipods propulsion units powered by a battery pack. The Azipod units are even able to rotate 360-degrees and achieve better fuel efficiency than conventional propulsion systems.

Benetti ’s latest design concept and the smaller Oasis deck that preceded it are just two examples of how clients are looking to replace starched salons and prim dining rooms with larger, easier-living exterior spaces. This also includes a preference for foldout rear decks, reimagined bows, and balconies that extend when activated, all of which are in evidence on Bilgin ’s 263-foot Leona , which showcases how to design every conceivable square foot across the yacht toward enhancing the outside environment. 

That trend “has really gained steam,” says Dickie Bannenberg, of yacht-design house Bannenberg & Rowell . “Now it’s all balconies, beach clubs, and shell doors everywhere you look. And it’s not just on 200-foot boats, either—it extends down into production models.” 

Andrew Collett, team principal at U.K.-based design firm RWD , which conceived both the Oasis and the Veranda deck configurations, says the change in tack is driven by a new generation of owners who are “seeking spacious areas that blend indoor and outdoor living, with clear views of the water.” 

The pandemic intensified demand for airier layouts, says Collett, much as tuberculosis impacted modernist architecture in the 20th century, when residential blueprints began to include hospital-inspired sanctuaries with balconies and clean, well-lit interiors. And while he says that some of the aesthetic shift predated the pandemic’s lockdowns, it’s also true that “Covid heightened the appreciation for open-air environments and privacy. Now we’re just aligning with new preferences for health consciousness.” 

As with carbon fiber’s popularity in smaller boats, “the evolution of glass-related technologies makes possible what really wasn’t achievable in the past,” says Bernardo Zuccon of Studio Zuccon , designer of Sanlorenzo ’s 57Steel Virtuosity and many other glass-laden superyachts. “Since structural glass is at times stronger than steel, we’re seeing the extreme enhancement of transparent surfaces. That allows for great versatility in our designs.” 

Glass’s technical renaissance—and how the notion of boundaries has changed thanks to it—is evident on gigayachts including the 297-foot Dar, the 263-foot Excellence, and the 263-foot Artefact, but nowhere more so than the 141-foot catamaran This Is It, with a superstructure and hull made of more than 50 percent of the material. 

Other recent launches, including Sanlorenzo’s SX112, feature entirely open aft decks with cutaway sides, while Sanlorenzo’s X-Space and Baglietto ’s T52 maximize as much exterior square footage as their designers could justify across their tiered decks. 

“People don’t want to be inside,” says Bannenberg. “They want healthy outdoor living, and the designers are adapting accordingly.” Which means, for increasingly innovative superyacht concepts, the sky’s the limit.

First look inside Benetti’s B.Now 50m charter yacht FANTASEA

Showing off her elegant and sophisticated interior for the first time, the brand new images inside the 50m (164ft) superyacht FANTASEA proves she is the perfect platform for any luxury yacht charter vacation .

Marking Benetti ’s third hull in its award-winning B.Now 50 series , the luxury superyacht FANTASEA is home to a wealth of charter -pleasing amenities and beautiful interiors that certainly leave a long-lasting impression. 

The custom motor yacht showcases elegant flowing lines with a near-vertical bow while maintaining a harmonious connection between the interior and outdoor decks. Her gracious interiors were designed by British studio RWD to reflect the characteristics of the owner’s unique vision and insight, whilst Benetti is responsible for her naval architecture and engineering.

Stepping inside, guests are greeted by an interior adorned with a variety of wood textures in a light and neutral color palette, creating a serene and calming environment. The use of contrasting shades of brown adds depth to the interior design, harmonizing with the bespoke interior details throughout the yacht. 

The light-filled main salon boasts large floor-to-ceiling windows and a dining table that is capable of accommodating up to 10 guests and features a bespoke leaf ceiling light that adds a touch of elegance to the contemporary interior design.

Ascending to the upper deck, guests are greeted by spacious relaxation areas, sunbeds aft, and yet another delightful alfresco dining spot. A sliding door provides easy access to the interior lounge of the yacht, where guests can enjoy various seating areas and a sit-up bar, creating the perfect setting for socializing and unwinding.

Additional onboard highlights include a sprawling sundeck with loungers and a bank of sunpads forward, as well as a shaded lounge area and a 36 square-meter beach club area with an infinity pool and additional sun loungers, for the ultimate waterside haven. 

Accommodating 12 guests across 6 staterooms, the yacht is versatile for a variety of charter party configurations. The owner's suite, located forward on the main deck, offers complete privacy with its own private balcony, a spacious walk-in wardrobe, a full-beam ensuite bathroom, and a vanity desk area.

The remaining four guest staterooms are situated amidships on the lower deck, thoughtfully separated from the crew quarters.

Sistership to the 50m (164ft) charter yacht JACOZAMI , which was delivered in 2022, both yachts provide a luxurious platform for those looking to dip their toes into the Mediterranean yacht charter scene.
