Split to Hvar Ferry and Catamaran 2024 Guide

Split to Hvar Ferry and Catamaran Guide

catamaran from hvar to split

Hvar is one of Croatian hot spots, everybody want to go to this beautiful island. Often, visitors that come to Croatia ask me how to take ferry from Split to Hvar ? Many times they place this question on my blog. Sometimes it’s not easy to repeat the same information all the time. Therefore, I am putting this information together to help you dear traveler! I promise that I will try to be as concise as much as I can. I do this in order to give you a right and distilled information that will save your time.

1. Ferries from Split to Hvar

2. split to hvar by catamaran, 3. reaching hvar by private boat.

There is only one company providing ferries that connect Split and Hvar island. Name of this company is Jadrolinija . It is owned by Croatian government. Even though main tourist season in Split lasts just for 6 months, Jadrolinija ferries run all year round. Moreover, Split to Hvar ferry runs 3 times a day in the winter time. Of course, ferries are more frequent in spring, summer and autumn.

Jadrolinija ferry in Split port

Ferries take passengers and cars likewise. During the summer months (June, July and August) it is recommended to be in port at least 1 1/2 hours before the ferry departure. It’s important to realize that this applies only for the passengers that go to Hvar by car and want to board their vehicles on the ferry. Summer is the busiest time of year in the port of Split, and therefore you need to line up early to board the ferry on time. If you are traveling without the car, just as passenger, be there half hour early. That would do.

Here is the exact location of the ferries that go to Hvar from Split . These ferries meet on the Pier of St. Peter (Gar sv. Petra in Croatian) in Split.

My recommendation to you is to buy ferry tickets online. That is easier than do it over the Jadrolinija counter. Therefore, here is a link to Jadrolinija ferry ticket online purchase site.

Also, on this site you will find updated prices for cars and passengers in 2020.

Arrival to Hvar island

Ferries land in Stari Grad town which is on the north side of Hvar island. From there it is easy to go to other towns (by car) on the island ( Hvar town , Vrboska, Jelsa, Sućuraj etc).

Many passengers that land in Stari Grad want to go to Hvar town (main tourist attraction on the island). You can do it by a taxi or private transfer from the port of Stari Grad. Cost for transfer is approximately 40 Euro per transfer .

Jadrolinija ferry on Hvar island

Also, you can save some money and take the public bus from Stari Grad ferry port to Hvar town. That is way cheaper than a private transfer. You will see the buses once you leave the ferry (on the right hand side in port). You can buy a ticket on the bus. Ticket price is 5 Euro/person. This bus will take you straight to Hvar town. Buses stop behind St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Hvar town. With this in mind – here is the link to bus timetable.

Catamaran is also a great option when we speak about transfers to Hvar. It departs from the port of Split and it takes passengers straight to Hvar town. Many visitors that go to Hvar island go straight to Hvar town and spend their vacation there. Catamarans are air conditioned and the ride to Hvar town lasts just for 1 hour. Hence, catamaran is very popular among the travelers and island visitors. However, I have to mention that catamarans take only passengers, cars can’t be boarded on them.

As for the luggage is being concerned, you can leave it on the racks that are available once you board the catamaran. So, luggage is not a concern at all. There are two companies providing this catamaran service, and those companies are: Jadrolinija and Kapetan Luka. Catamaran quality and size is about the same. Price is the same too: 20 Euro per person each way (approximately). Each catamaran holds a maximum of 400 passengers.

Krilo catamaran sailing from Split to Hvar

Jadrolinija – is the national ferry and catamaran provider. Here is Jadrolinija official web site where you can see the catamaran schedules and prices. Use the same page for booking.

Kapetan Luka – is privately own provider of catamaran services in Croatia. Their services are not available all year round. They operate from 01.04 until 31.10. Therefore you can book them for those dates only. Finally, here is Kapetan luka offical website where you can see catamaran schedules and prices. Use the same page for booking.

Also, these companies meet their passengers on different places in the port of Split:

Jadrolinija – their catamaran passengers meet on the Pier of St. Nicholas (Gat sv. Nikole in Croatian). Here is the exact Google location of the Pier of St. Nicholas.

Kapetan Luka – their catamaran passengers meet on the Pier of St. Peter (Gat sv. Petra in Croatian). Here is the exact Google location of the Pier of St. Peter.

Hvar town is the main tourist attraction on the island of Hvar

Finally, we got to this part. Private boat transfer to Hvar is by all means the most convenient way of traveling to the island . There is also a huge demand for this service. Therefore, there are many companies offering this type of service. I have used the services of Atlantis Marine Company many times and I was always happy with them.

However, as I said, there are many companies on the market, supplying these services. Hence, I would recommend you to do your own research on this subject.

Definitely, this is the most expensive way of traveling and you really have to look into it deeply (we all have our budgets, ways of traveling and idea of a great holiday). Of course, take your time when doing this.

Hi, easyJet flight allows suitcases of 23kgs but you say ferry only accepts suitcases up to 20kgs? How do we overcome this?

' src=

Hello Bill, thank you for your inquiry. 23kg suitcases are fine. I called all the ferry companies and they confirmed that you can bring on your luggage on the catamaran. They will also update their online information accordingly. Best regards Filip Tourdesk

' src=

Hello, we have a lot of luggage with us. 2x big suitcases and 2x cabin size suitcases along with an infant who will be in a pushchair. Is this amount of luggage allowed? What is the additional luggage fee if not?

Many thanks

Hello Emma,

I hope all is well. Thank you for your inquiry. Catamaran and ferry companies in Croatia allow 1 big suitcase per person to be boarded on their vessels. Weight limit is 20 kilos per suitcase.

So, you can board and leave those 2 big suitcases on the racks. Once you enter the gangway you will see the racks right there.

Cabin size suitcases are like carry ons, no worries there, so you can put them under your seats. Pushchair can be folded, I am sure that the crew will do their best to accommodate.

There is no additional cost for additional luggage.

So, you are all covered!

Best regards

Hello The information was very clear and useful, thank you. One thing I would like to ask: can you take a dog on the catamarans Split – Hvar town? My dog is medium sized ( 24 kilos) I hope you can help Thank you

Hello Lynn, I hope all is well. I just contacted ferry providers in regards to your inquiry. They answered my call and said that they have a box (cage) on the bow of the catamaran (outside). That cage is there for the dogs. All companies charge the ticket for the dog. Jadrolinija stated that they charge 50% of the passengers ticket, Krilo charges full amount. I hope this helps Best regards Filip

We are planning on a visit to Hvar. One of us uses a walker or wheelchair. Are the ferries handicapped accessible? What is your advice? Thank you

Hello Lisa,

I hope all is well. Only one ferry has a lift, and that’s a ferry that connects Split to Stari Grad (port on the north side of the island of Hvar). The name of this ferry is Faros.

If you want to take a catamaran from Split to Hvar Town (on Hvar island), please note that these catamarans have no lifts. They use ramps to board passengers. So, you could push the wheelchair up to the catamaran entrance and then store the wheelchair and your co-traveler could enjoy the ride.

Please let me know should you have some more questions.

Where to stay in split.

Hvar to Split by Ferry via Stari Grad

If you’re travelling by car from Hvar to Split, your best option is to take a ferry from Stari Grad. This town is located 20 km northeast of Hvar town.

As the oldest town in Croatia, Stari Grad is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Although taking this route adds an hour to your travel time, this route gives you a chance to see the beauty of this ancient town.

Step 1: Hvar to Stari Grad by Car

When travelling by car, you only need to drive around 30 minutes northeast to reach the Stari Grad Port .

For foot passengers: Hvar to Stari Grad by Taxi or Bus

However, if you’re travelling this route for other reasons – perhaps if the direct ferries are fully-booked – you can also take a 30-minute taxi or bus from Hvar to Stari Grad.

Taxis are really easy to find, and you can get a ride with rates from €34 ($31) .

Buses are much cheaper with fares from €3.60 ($3.30) . However, their departure times are far apart (2 to 3 hours in the afternoon), so you might have to wait a while.

Step 2: Stari Grad to Split by Ferry

From Stari Grad, Jadrolinija offers several ferry trips bound for Split. The ferry journey takes 2 hours.

Ticket prices start from €5.50 ($5.10) per person. For vehicles, rates start from €35 ($32) per car.

Ferries dock at Split Ferry Port, from where the Old Town is just within walking distance.

You can check the full schedule and rates for vehicles on the Jadrolinija website.

Hvar to Split by High-Speed Ferry

Travelling by ferry is a cheap and easy way to get from Hvar to Split in just about an hour.

Kapetan Luka and Jadrolinija offer at least one trip daily all year round. More trips are available in the tourist season (May to September).

Book your ferry ticket in advance during high season (June-September)

Croatia has been rising in popularity for travellers, particularly Split and Zadar. This means ferries are often fully-booked and that’s why we highly recommend that you reserve your tickets online 3-5 days in advance .

If you buy your ticket through BookAway , you can still cancel your tickets free of charge up to 24 hours before departure.

Rather buy your tickets at the port? It’s best to get to the harbour at least an hour prior to your desired departure for a chance at getting a ticket , especially during the high season. We recommend lining up at the harbour in the morning so that you’ll have more chances of getting a ticket for a ferry departing on the same day.

Prefer to buy your ticket at the harbour? In that case, line up at the port at least one hour before departure when travelling in the high season (June-September). We recommend going to the ticket office in the early morning so that you can avoid waiting in the hot sun and increase your chances to get a ticket for your desired departure time.

If you can’t board your desired ferry, you’ll have to wait for the next ferry from Hvar to Split.

Hvar to Split high-speed ferry schedule (2022)

Departure and arrival station.

Both ferries depart from the Harbour of Hvar in Hvar Town. This town is on the western side of the island.

The ferries arrive at  Split Ferry Port , located just around 500m south of the Old Town. This port is just within walking distance from most hotels in the city centre.

High-speed ferry of Kapetan Luka

ferry from Split to Hvar Island

Our ferry of choice is the high-speed ferry operated by Kapetan Luka. The ferry can take you from Hvar to Split in just 50 minutes.

The Kapetan Luka ferry has six departures per day from Hvar to Split during peak season and at least one trip daily during the low season.

More importantly, if you book your ride online via BookAway, you can expect a seat on your desired date and time. No need to queue at the port for at least an hour. BookAway also offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure for this route.

Alternative: Jadrolinija ferry

Jadrolinija also offers ferry rides from Hvar to Split. It’s a bit cheaper with fares from €17.50 ($16.20) during peak season, but also not as luxurious or comfortable as those offered by Kapetan Luka.

The Jadrolinija catamaran has several trips from 06:35 to 18:00 during summer (June to September). Outside these months, the catamaran offers only one trip daily at 06:35.

Since schedules vary, you need to first check the Jadrolinija website for the scheduled departures on your desired date.

Note that Jadrolinija operates on a full=full rule . This means that even though you book your tickets online via their website, there’s still a chance you will not get a place on the boat.

When travelling with Jadrolinija, you need to queue at the port at least an hour before your trip. Better to schedule an early departure too! If you miss the boat you have booked, you can always take a later boat to Hvar Island.

We don’t think it’s worth the hassle to wait half a day for your boat just to save a few bucks, though. It’s much better to spend a few euros more on Kapetan Luka’s fast boat that guarantees a place on board.

Travelling in winter months?

The schedules above are for ferry schedules during the tourist season. There should be fewer ferries operating in the colder months (October-March), just one to two trips per day for both Kapetan Luka and Jadrolinija.

Also, note that ferries may not be allowed to sail during severe weather conditions. This is more common during the winter and less likely in summer.

You can expect blue skies and smooth seas from May through October. Just in case your ferry is not allowed to travel for some reason, you will have the option to take the next available ferry or receive a full refund.

Hvar to Split by Catamaran via Jelsa

If you’re a foot passenger looking for an alternative route, there is also an option to take a catamaran from Jelsa. Located 26 km west of Hvar Town, Jelsa is another one of the island’s charming towns.

We recommend that you take this route only if the abovementioned ferry routes are already fully booked. The taxi from Hvar town to Jelsa can be quite expensive.

Step 1: Hvar to Jelsa by Taxi

Your only option to get to Jelsa from Hvar town is a taxi ride. Rates start from €50 ($46) for the 30-minute journey.

Step 2: Jelsa, Hvar to Split by Ferry

Jadrolinija operates one daily catamaran trip from Jelsa to Split. The catamaran departs at 07:00 on Saturdays and 13:00 on Sundays. For the rest of the week, the departure is at 06:00. A ticket costs €5.50 ($5.10) .

The ferry ride takes 1.5 hours, as these ferries also make a short stop at Bol before heading to Split.

From Split Ferry Port , you can find the Old Town about 500m to the north.

Hvar to Split by Private Group Transfer

Private group transfers are also available from Hvar to Split.

Bonaca Tours, Segorent, and Absolut Charter offer private motorboats for groups of eight people. Rates start from €365 ($340) for four people and €420 ($385) for a speedboat that can accommodate eight passengers.

This option is definitely more expensive, but having your own motorboat is also an experience on its own.

Travel time is around an hour from Hvar to Split city centre.

The speedboats depart from Hvar Port in the town centre. They dock at Matejuska Port , just next to Split city centre.

Hvar to Split Airport with Private Transfer

A private transfer is especially convenient when travelling straight from Hvar to Split Airport. Rates are just the same as going to Split city centre.

The speedboats dock at Divulje Port , located about 1.5 km south of Split Airport. From the port, a car will pick you up to bring you or your group to the airport.

We recommend booking your private transfer with BookAway, which offers nice cars and top-notch customer support.

Our favourite places to stay in Split

Important: Tourism in Croatia is very seasonal. Much of the available accommodation in Croatia is fully booked in the summer, but many sites are closed in the winter months. With July and August being the peak season, rates can rise 3 times as high as compared the low season or shoulder months. We recommend booking your accommodation at least 1 month in advance to lock in better rates.

  • The Toll fees can be paid with any currency including the Euro.
  • There are many fuel stations on the highways with toilet and coffee facilities but if you go off the highway there are not that many fuel stations so we advise you fill up your tank regularly and start looking for a fuel station when your tank gets half full. Fuel stations only accept local currency so not the Euro (and of course credit cards - visa, master card etc).
  • When paying by credit card anywhere please have a pin code available otherwise credit card payments can not be accepted in Croatia.
  • Have your car lights on all day
  • We advise you not to change money in the local tourist offices / exchange bureaus as the banks have the best & non-commission rates.
  • ATM's can be found just about everywhere!

Hi travellers,

1. Overnight ferry from Ancona, Italy to Split. I do not find any ferry directly to Dubrovnik from Ancona. Is there any?

2. Spending 2 days in Split . 1 day for exploring Split and 2nd day may be Trogir or Krka NP. Please suggest what else can be done?

3. Brac or Hvar island for 1 night? Which one to choose? We are mostly interested in leisure. Can we see Lavender fields in mid May? Then we will choose Hvar. Please pour suggestions.

4. Hvar/Brac to Dubrovnik by ferry and stay there for 2 nights.

5. Travel to Zadar from Dubrovnik by bus and stay there for 2 night. Not decided yet what can be done in Zadar.

6. Zadar to Zagreb by bus and stay there for 1 night.

Is this itinerary doable or should I skip Dubrovnik or Zadar?

Where to see bus schedules for May 2024?

You may be better off spending one night in Split , heading to an island, then going Dubrovnik to Zagreb with a stop in Split, and maybe a night in Plitvice lakes instead of Zadar en route to Zagreb. So 1 night Split, Hvar /Brač 1 night, Dubrovnik 2 nights, Split 2 nights, Plitvice 1 night, Zagreb 1 night. But I am not sure about the bus to Plitvice from Split.

You can find schedules on buscroatia.com

Thank you for quick response John.

There should be some activities for him also. Is there any other adventurous places/things which may be of interest of a teen?

I am thinking to do any one NP, either Krka or Pitvice due to time constraints.

2 nights Split (day trip to Omis for rafting, hiking and/or ziplining)

catamaran to Hvar

2 nights Hvar (if weather permits you can do a blue cave boat trip)

catamaran to Split and bus to Zadar (the solar lights are called the Sun Salutation)

2 nights Zadar (could do a NP Kornati boat trip)

bus to Plitvice

1 night Plitvice

visit at opening then bus to Zagreb

1 night Zagreb

Hey Thank you S.S. This sounds great.

Dubrovnik looks beautiful but wondering if it has anything more to offer others GOT, if compare to Split and Zagreb ? Travelling to Dubrovnik will take time at its far from Split.

Rather I am thinking to spend time in Hvar . Can we see Lavender fields only in Hvar?

Revised iternery as,

Day 1 - once reached to Split from Ancona, travelling to Hvar. Not staying in Split

Day 2- explore Hvar

Day 4 - Dubrovnik

Day 5 - Dubrovnik to Zadar

Day 6 - explore Zadar

Day 7 - Zadar to Pitvice

Day 8 - Pitvice to Zagreb

Day 9 - fly back to home

I will add 1 more day to Croatia iternery from my Italy iternery.

When you arrive in Split I highly recommend spending a few hours exploring the Palace before heading to Hvar . There is luggage storage at the Port if you require it.

Thank you once again, S.S.

I really appreciate your help.

Hope I am wrong but at this late date you will be lucky to find accommodations anywhere for this May.

You will not be lucky, there is plenty of accommodation available.
