SAM WU IS NOT AFRAID OF GHOSTS

From the sam wu is not afraid series , vol. 1.

by Katie Tsang & Kevin Tsang ; illustrated by Nathan Reed ‧ RELEASE DATE: Oct. 9, 2018

Funny but not groundbreaking, a solid purchase for those looking to diversify their early chapter book collections.

Sam Wu has the perfect plan to prove that he’s brave: embark on a bold adventure, get a “trusty companion,” and defeat the ghost in his home!

After an INCIDENT that has people calling him Scaredy-Cat Sam, Sam’s efforts to prove them wrong take on a life of their own. His solo trip to space derailed, Sam finds himself the owner of an enormous snake and the unwitting host to some supernatural activity—probably the Ghost King! But with his best friends, Zoe (the fastest and tallest!) and Bernard (the smartest!), and Lucy (“a pretty good little sister,” sometimes), Sam just might be able to handle it all. Sam’s crises tread a well-worn path, but his authentically funny voice still appeals (while purchasing a KILLER SNAKE: “Oh, there’s no need for me to hold it!…I can tell that is a high-quality snake ”). Reluctant readers and fans of the Wimpy Kid series and its ilk will appreciate the book’s dynamic type, graphics galore, cartoonish illustrations, and ironic footnotes. Though some characterizations read a bit rote (athletic Zoe is darker-skinned, while brainy Bernard is white), Sam’s mortification during his Chinese family’s meal of roast duck and turnip cake will resonate with anyone who has ever felt different.

HORRIBLE HARRY SAYS GOODBYE

From the horrible harry series , vol. 37.

by Suzy Kline ; illustrated by Amy Wummer ‧ RELEASE DATE: Nov. 27, 2018

A fitting farewell, still funny, acute, and positive in its view of human nature even in its 37th episode.

A long-running series reaches its closing chapters.

Having, as Kline notes in her warm valedictory acknowledgements, taken 30 years to get through second and third grade, Harry Spooger is overdue to move on—but not just into fourth grade, it turns out, as his family is moving to another town as soon as the school year ends. The news leaves his best friend, narrator “Dougo,” devastated…particularly as Harry doesn’t seem all that fussed about it. With series fans in mind, the author takes Harry through a sort of last-day-of-school farewell tour. From his desk he pulls a burned hot dog and other items that featured in past episodes, says goodbye to Song Lee and other classmates, and even (for the first time ever) leads Doug and readers into his house and memento-strewn room for further reminiscing. Of course, Harry isn’t as blasé about the move as he pretends, and eyes aren’t exactly dry when he departs. But hardly is he out of sight before Doug is meeting Mohammad, a new neighbor from Syria who (along with further diversifying a cast that began as mostly white but has become increasingly multiethnic over the years) will also be starting fourth grade at summer’s end, and planning a written account of his “horrible” buddy’s exploits. Finished illustrations not seen.

ZARA'S RULES FOR RECORD-BREAKING FUN

From the zara's rules series , vol. 1.

by Hena Khan ; illustrated by Wastana Haikal ‧ RELEASE DATE: April 19, 2022

A charming contemporary story with a classic feel.

A 10 ¾-year-old girl weathers changes in her social circle—and her sense of self.

Dubbed “Queen of the Neighborhood” by beloved neighbor Mr. Chapman, who has sadly left Maryland for balmy Florida, Zara is apprehensive when a family with two kids moves into his house, potentially upsetting the delicate social balance. Readers familiar with Khan’s Zayd Saleem, Chasing the Dream books, set a few years after this series opener, will recognize the bustling Pakistani American Muslim household. Assertive, organized Zara and rambunctious 7-year-old Zayd live with their Mama and Baba; the siblings’ grandparents and uncle are integral parts of their daily lives. Zara and Zayd enjoy playing outside with their friends—Black sisters Jade and Gloria, White Alan, and Chinese American Melvin. Mr. Chapman always said that Zara knew how to “rule with grace and fairness,” but new arrivals Naomi and Michael, Jewish kids who are eager to engage socially, put this to the test. When Jamal Mamoo, Mama’s brother, brings over his Guinness World Records book, Zara decides that becoming a world-record holder is the boost her social status needs. Her humorous (and futile) attempts to make her mark ultimately lead her to being a more patient and understanding big sister and more flexible and supportive companion to friends old and new. Strong pacing, fluid prose, engaging hijinks, and heartwarming scenes of family life and outdoor play are complemented by expressive illustrations.

Product description

"Sam Wu has troubles. Classmate Ralph Phillip Zinkerman the Third makes fun of him; the pet snake he bought to make himself look brave has disappeared; and a trip to the space museum becomes the scene of the INCIDENT, where an unsanctioned visit to a rocket-ship exhibit results in him wetting his pants (see trouble number one). Written with lots of energy and illustrated with ink drawings throughout (the book's design, with its bold lettering and clever format, also makes a strong statement), this is will no doubt remind readers of the Wimpy Kid and his compatriots. The fact of Sam's ethnicity comes out here and there--there's a funny scene where he invites kids home for dinner--but mostly S am is an everykid, trying to fit in, hoping he can become braver, and determined to outsmart his nemesis, Ralph, which is difficult, but not impossible. A quick read for young middle-graders." -- Booklist Online

Sam Wu Is NOT Afraid of Ghosts! (Sam Wu is Not Afraid) by Kevin Tsang, Katie Tsang, and Nathan Reed

By Kevin Tsang, Katie Tsang, and and, Nathan Reed

Brilliantly funny new series about the bravest scaredy-cat in the world

I liked this book best when Sam peed his pants. I liked Sam best. Yes I would recommend this book.

The book that started my son's journey of enjoying reading - this is the book that inspired him to want to read!

Sam Wu is NOT afraid of ghosts is fiction . I liked the phrase "scaredy cat Sam" in the story it was funny. My favourite character was Sam wu because he is the bravest . I like the ghost bit when they tried solving the ghost mystery . Sam wu's friends are Zoe and Bernard . Sam wu's enemy is Ralph Philip Zinkerman the Third. Ralph Zinkerman the Third's sister is way nicer than Ralph Zinkerman the Third.

I did not like this book because I felt like it was't my style. This book was fictional. It was about Sam and his friengs going on a space adventure. I did not like it but I think my friend might like it.

Amazing! You may think that I like every book but think again! I love the book and the adventures but it just doesn’t have any challenge words. Now, challenge words are very important for my school so I try to get books that have them. Challenge words improve your vocabulary and make your writing better. Still this is a really good book and also read all the others pls they’re amazing I haven’t read them but u can before me

I enjoyed this book. I liked that they thought his pet snake was the ghost rattling around in the vents.

I definitely would recommend it for a person who really likes to be scared of ghosts .It would be a pleasure to read it again. Loved it.

I read this as part of a challenge and really liked it. I would recommend it.

Hilariously funny, easy read. So accessible for children whilst being part of a series so lots of opportunity to further reading.

I have read Sam wu is not afraid of spiders and I liked the book so that inspired me to read this book.

This book is a fiction. I enjoyed this book, this is also a very funny story. I would recommend this book to people who like adventurous and people who like the dark and pretend ghosts.

It was a fiction book and I like it as it's all about conquering your fears even-though people think you're scared of it still (like Ralph). I think you should read this book because it is ridiculous.

I really enjoyed this book because it was very funny and the characters did some very naughty things.

I could not put this book down when I’d started reading it.

My favourite character by far was Sam Wu!

I would definitely recommend this book.

I loved this book. Butterbutt is my favourite character. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series. I’d definitely recommend this to everyone.

this was a funny book and i liked reading this because he always wants to hide his fear but never wants to amit he is afraid

I enjoyed reading this book but found it a bit annoying how silly Sam could be sometimes.

I like the Sam Wu books

This book wasn't the best because Sam Wu has a class mate Ralf who is mean. My favourite character was Regina because she is nice and very honest. I would recommend this book to people who like a silly and funny story.

I like it because it sais he isnt afraid of ghoststs when he is afraid.

This was a fiction book about a boy called Sam and is NOT afraid of ghosts (not). This book is by the amazing Kevin Tsang, the wonderful Katie Tsang and the mind blowing Nathan Reed.

A great book, lovely to read and flowed well, even made me laugh out loud!

These books are good and interesting. I like all the characters, except for Ralph, who is a bit rude.

Great book read it now

This book was requested by one of my pupils so of course, I had to get it and read it! I hadn’t realised initially that Sam Wu was written by @kevgtsang and @kwebberwanders of the more recent Dragon Mountain books (also loved in my class), nor did I realise that there are another 4 Sam Wu adventures which I will now obviously have to buy. I do know however, that he’s going to prove very popular when I take him to school next week. Sam may not be quite as brave as he likes to make out… and that is ok. I have a feeling he can accomplish anything with his feisty sister (called Lucy, so fabulous, obvs 😉) and two best mates. The perfect mix of fun and bonkers shenanigans with superb artwork by @nathanreedillo - kids will love it ❤️ #bestkidsbooks #samwu #egmontbooks #teachersthatread #kidsbookreviews #kidsbookshelf #kidsbooks #kidsbookstagram #kidsbookswelove

I wish it was longer.

I was recommended this book as a Year 3 read and it’s great fun - definitely one for engaging more in reading and there’s a whole series out there to be discovered. The characters are likeable and relatable and I’m a big fan of Bernard the Science Fair champion and his all knowing ways. Another one for the class library!

It was a very funny book and I loved that the pet was scaring the owner. Fang was my favorite character!

I really loved how the author added little tidbits of Asian culture into the story. This made Sam more of a rounded character and authentic character. I loved Sam's little sister the best and thought it was nice to see a cool and brave female character. I would recommend it to children who enjoy Diary of the Wimpy Kid.
